O.k. it's been a few weeks and I’ve thought this over. People said that they wouldn't drive with a 2 year old in the car or don't want to take their S.O. or don't want to drive 3 hours to a GTG. That's fine; those people who want to make excuses are the people I don't direct this GTG to. I'm looking for the Americans not American'ts. The national GTG is not something you have to do. Maybe you'll be getting married that weekend, maybe you'll have sewage put it and can't make it, OR maybe you'll take the time off of cutting your grass and come out and see some bad ass B5 & B5.5's. It's up to you.

However it does make sense that the U.S.A. is huge and if we broke the map into regions to have a simultaneous two day national GTG (Saturday, Sunday maybe). I noticed that there seem to be an abundant number of members in...
1) California
2) Texas/Arkansas/Louisiana
3) Washington
4) Ohio/Pennsylvania
5) New York
6) New England (CT, Mass, NH, Maine)
7) Florida, Georgia, and the sunny south.

I'm willing to travel to go somewhere different. Personally I'd love to drive Deal's Gap. But, for the augment that not everyone likes to take that much time, would 7 national GTG, determined by regional members, be better for you to attend?

In the past I've noticed that there is 1 national GTG a year. Not everyone goes, but those that do seem to have a good time. Maybe we should stick to the idea that there is only 1 a year and if you can attend it great, if not, hope to see you next year.

So the question remains, should there be one or more than one?

I've been thinking that I'd like to have this question answered by alot of people before it turns February.

Well, I noticed that for the SFLGTG, tons of people show from multiple regions so maybe 1 is good. I personally think that there could be 1 for the East coast, West, and Central or something of that matter. I know that the SFLGTG is all Audi/VW but we do get a fair share of Passats. We should keep in mind our Canadian brotheren also.

This whole thing boggles my mind.

Look in the Events & Gatherings Forum. There are GTG's all over the country all the time. Anyone can easily go to any of these that are within a short driving distance. All year round.

If we have Multiple Regional National GTG's, then it's not really a National GTG, is it!? Well, is it?

And I have yet to see more than 20 cars show up for a National GTG, and 75% of those 20 are always "local." I look at 39 votes for Knoxville, 37 for Pitt, and 38 for Vegas, and think "yeah, right." If you're not gonna show, then don't f*ckin' vote.

We've had the GTG's in four - count 'em FOUR - "Central" locations. 2 Denver, 1 Chicago, and - well, Minnesota is North Central. Did that help attendance? Not one damn bit. Get real, people. Hell, the year we had it in Chicago, the Denver crew put on an alternate GTG for the westerners that couldn't make it to Chicago. You wanna know who showed up from the Western states? I'd like to know, too - and I was there. It doesn't matter where we have it, you aren't gonna go anyway, so quit whining about it.

One of the nice things about "moving" the GTG around the country is that it gives people an opportunity to see parts of the country that they don't normally see. Driving a long way to get there is part of the experience. We live in a huge, beautiful country. Each of our states is big enough to be a country in most parts of the world. Either the National GTG is important enough for you to make the trip, or it's not. If it's not, that's OK, and you can go to local GTG's to your heart's content.

I'm lucky - I live in a "central" location, so I can pretty much go wherever in 2 days. But if I lived on one coast, and the National GTG was on the other coast - that's OK, I'll miss it this year, and catch it next year when it's someplace closer. It ain't rocket science.

So if we don't have it in Knoxville, I wanna see you SEC guys organize a Knoxville GTG with a Deal's Gap run, and I'll show up. Go Big Orange (boy they were pretty lame this year, weren't they?!?!).

Rusty-

You're right. Screw it, I'm not going. Its not important enough for me to take time away from my family and work to drive across the friggin country to go hang out with 20 other Passat owners when I can stay local, and hang out with 50 of them. Thanks for clearing that up for me - don't know what I was thinking.

I'm just glad I didn't vote for any of the cities listed so that my vote isn't skewing the results now that I'm not planning on attending.

I like the way you think Rusty! We could surely get a GTG down for the Gap! I just went a few months ago and it was GREAT! Thats why I vote for a Knoxville national gtg.....not because Im close, but the scenery and to drive the gap is an experience in itself!!!!!

FWIW, I went at the end of October and it couldnt be more perfect! Ive been in Mid Sept before and between the weather and the crowd, I would say Oct is the best time for this to happen!

(and p.s. we dont talk about the Vols season.)

COME ON GUYS!!!! THIS IS AN AMAZING PLACE AND YOU WILL HAVE A BLAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not to be a PITA but there are maybe 3 local members here in arkansas (passat owners that is) and all of the other VW guys never do anything. the most PW guys i have ever met, i drove 7-8 hours down to dallas to a GTG down there. Now if the national GTG was say 5-8 hours away from me i would make every effort, and use every resource open to a 18y/o highschool student to attend. I would have loved to come to any of those places, but with what money I can make going to school it's just impossible.

So, IF the National GTG is near me i'll be there if it's a 2 day drive maybe next year:thumbup:

Excellent point. Let's have 1 national GTG, not 7. If you can't come, then don't come. If you can then great.

One national GTG is easier to organize than seven. I'll gladly work with someone who has knoledge of the area if it's Knoxville or if it's Pittsburgh, but I'm out if it's Las Vegas.

I'm in, that's why I voted for Knoxville. I'd love to camp out under the stars and enjoy a run on Deal's Gap. I hope the police aren't out to ruin the run. If one of us get's pulled over, are we all going to pull over to wait for them or are they on their own?

i think knoxville would be a good location, its pretty central in the country and the scenery would be great. of course there are going to be people that cant take the time for the drive or what not, we cant make everybody happy, it just simply isn't gonna happen.

but for me personally i'd love to see a national GTG, here in iowa, there are only two other passats in the state that i know of that are enthusiasts and i have to drive at least an hour to even meet up with some of them, and there are very few GTGs in the midwest region anyway --- not to mention the "central" section of this site includes 3/4s of the country, many states of which really aren't considered the midwest -- what is it right now? like idaho to ohio? thats 2000 miles between them, thats WAY to big to really be classified as "regional". but anyway thats just my 2 cents

i'll be more than happy to attend so long as i have the time and funds avalible to do so

Knoxville! Knoxville! Knoxville!

I just might have to get a trailer hitch for the Passat and trailer the Ducati down there too. Just too much fun.

Do you think that the 1.8T can pull a trailor & bike without putting stress on the motor?

Sure, why not? THe bike & trailer together probably wouldn't even break 800 pounds. Just about every car out there can haul up to a thousand pounds.

Nah, you da man... just pick one! You were going to cut it off in December, but I'm the one that wanted you to extend it.

Knoxville! Knoxville! Knoxville! I totally agree! I would definitely make the drive from Chicago so spend a few days down there...

However, can someone explain a GTG. I understand some of it, but if you could explain it more, thatd be great.

not really. pittsburgh has gone through a renaissance and is a pretty nice city imho. but i have been to the remaining steelmaking mills (e.t., mon valley, and clairton) and those are kinda dirty areas of town. but without steel we wouldn't have cars, fridges, washing machines, etc.!

the decline of steelmaking in the us will come back to bite our you know what someday.
