I've had both, and I prefer the original B5. Cleaner, less busy - and almost no chrome. Who thought it was a good idea to put reflective chrome rings around instruments you need to see?

B5.5 as my model: 4Mo 1.8T, stick only came with the newer body style.

 

B5.5 all the way no jetta's=b5's for me except wagon

 

B5.5 for my vote...on my daily 90 mile drive to and from work, I notice of the B5 can be mistaken for a early MKIV Jetta from the rear.

B5.5 all the way. I think it looks "classier". Smoother lines and styling for sure. I hate the stupid chrome trim on the bumpers, doors, and windows though.

People are amazed when I tell them my 2002 is almost 10yrs old.
They comment on the shape/styling, commenting that they would guess its a 2yr old car.

 

I love my :b5:. Cleaner, less chromey, neat.

The only thing I like better on a :b55: is the way the votex kit looks.

 

I love both my cars, but at the end of the day, the 5.5's stiffer chassis, more sophisticated styling, and added convenience features take the cake.

I have a b5.5 and love it. Looks much more modern and has real cup holders I'm one of the younger generation and chrome is coming back in, so I actually quite like the look

 

i like the front end of the B5 better. but i like the rear end of the B5.5 better.

I have B5.5, and I like it much better. when I was buying it I was choosing between 2 B5 and B5.5. I went with B5.5. I like body lines better, the lights head and tail. Also I have 2000 Jetta MKIV GLS, and I tell you B5 passat and a earlier jettas mkIV look alike. So why buy same car I already have.

 

B5.5 without a doubt. So much more a current looking car, and a little more aggressive looking.

Love my 5.5 for the slightly better bumpers, and the one piece oem headlights. (no corner light falling out!) But most of the times, I wish I had the b5's 1.8t vs the b5.5 sensor heavy 1.8t

:b55: any day, but like B5's too. Some people have told me the car looks like a new model, not a 10 year old one.

Plus I love the chrome on the Black one. I actually think a stock black one without chrome would look dull and lifeless..curves not defined

B5.5 for me. I think its got better looking corners.
The B5 on the other hand looks very modable.

And Chrome? You want chrome look at the cars built in the 50s & 60s. Thats chrome.
To my taste the chrome on a b5.5 is subdued. It doesn't detract, it draws to the lines of the car.

And as far as aging well, many people comment to me "New car?".
