I was curious as to what things were different between the U.S. spec vehicles and Euro vehicles; I also wanted to be able to actually read up on what I have been putting in my car. So I decided to buy a manual for 1997-2000 B5 Passats, for a steal at $22.00. All of the cool stuff we don't have is unbelievable, from the hands-free phone, to the interior monitoring. I also plan to ship over a B5.5 2001-2005 manual to fill in on things like the heated windshield, so I will post here when I get it. If anyone is interested, I will scan the pages and post them up here (In a PDF format hopefully).

I guess they have to offer some cool stuff to help justify the increased relative pricing over there (in addition to the embedded VAT, etc). It's far from the better deal, but some of those features help take the edge off the cost.

Definitely interested to see what you find!

As a general answer, most cars sold here are sold in Europe at a class or two higher than we're accustomed to (eg the Passat is a mainstream midsize family sedan here, but is a near-lux large sedan in Europe; the Golf is an economy car here, but a mainstream family car in Europe; etc). In turn, they pay higher prices and get a few more goodies with the cars--and usually a lot more engine choices.

x2... if you find anything that you think could possibly be enabled or unlocked on our cars, post it on this thread... that would get interesting. I'm sure theres tons of things that when making the US spec car, they just disabled the feature but didn't take the time to take it out.. i'm almost sure of it :driving:

Rather interesting thread this.

Coming from and owning a Passat from the other side of the pond, I would also like to know the differences between US and Europe cars.

From most of the pics I see on here, well the b5.5s as I own one, is that you have different shaped tail gate for your license plates and coloured lights or reflectors on the front and rear side bumpers.

Other differences would be cool to know :D

To those that want a copy of the manual, I will hopefully complete the scans in two weeks or so; I apologize for the length of time, but the spring semester is beginning for me, and I will not have as much free time to shorten the process of scanning the pages. I will also send this message to you via PM, please verify with me that you receive it. Also, if there is anyone else that would like a copy of a European B5 manual, please let me know.

Here are some things from off of the top of my head for the B5:
Xenon Gas Discharge headlights (package came with crystal clear corners, automatic headlight leveling system, and headlight washers)
Manual headlight leveling system via rheostat
Headlight Washers a la carte
Navigation System (came with Full-FIS cluster, options were a TMC box for dynamic navigation, TV-Tuner, and DSP sound system)
The natural Euro-switch
Gamma, Beta, etc... stereo head unit options, with DSP as an option (All radios including the navigation system were equipped with TIM, a traffic announcement function that recorded broadcasts of traffic news from certain stations.)
Telephone built into center armrest (this was able to be heard over the stereo, and microphone built into the dome light for speaking; in B5.5's if you had steering wheel controls you could answer the phone with a switch above the "Cancel" button and search through the phone's caller directory with the controls for the FIS cluster)
Heated Windshield (B5.5 only)
ESP was an option on the B5 body style, it was not reserved for the B5.5
Rear heated seats for the B5.5
Alcantara Leather seats
Recaro sport seats for the B5.5
Solar sunroof to power interior fans in the B5.5
The "anti-theft alarm system" (package came with interior motion sensors built into the rear reading lights and cancellation switch to the left of the driver; in B5.5's the infamous goose alarm horn was replaced with an alarm chirp much like the newer VAG vehicles)
The 9 engine options (not including W8 in 2003)
I had read somewhere that in South America, a power rear sunshade was available.
The clusters in Europe had built in service intervals that would be displayed when they were reached.
Rear Parking distance sensors (PDC)
There were five different variations of wood trim available, Net Optic was also an option.
