Chipping your 2.0T?

I am seriously considering this. Anyone that can chime in and tell me how much of a difference it made I would appreciate it. We have a 2009 Passat Komfort automatic transmission. I am very impressed by the stock performance. The turbo pulls real nice. But, as always, more can be better and I also hear chipping will/can improve fuel efficiency too. I will be leaving everything else stock. So far the only research I have done is on the APR chipping. Comments, feedback, real world experience would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I have the GIAC and I can tell a difference right away. Better throttle response...MPG is somewhat better, depends how you drive. Even at the min you get almost 10 HP if you don't add intake and exhaust. This is from GIAC site...I hear some other chip tunes are higher numbers than this...even though GIAC claim 20hp the dynos show only a 6-7 hp gain at stock. So to truly gain the gains...you need to also add intake and exhaust...

"Programming for - The 2008 - 2006 Passat ® 2.0T

GIAC performance software for the 2008 - 2006 Passat ® 2.0T smoothly delivers a 20-50hp and 50-85 ft-lbs gain. For optimum performance the software must be coupled with a cold air intake, exhaust, and the latest factory upgraded rail pump (although GIAC offers software options for all factory rail pumps).

i have a 3.6 not a 2.0T but i also have a mk4 gti 1.8T and the power and torque that comes out of a software reflash on the turbo car is amazing. I am not going to argue brand with anyone, find something that is close to where you live and that has a good rep, nice looking shop, nice cars in it ect.... I live in PA and use SSI Auto in Parkville MD and they are awesome.... both of my cars have Revo software and i love it, i would get it on every car i ever own its so smooth and there is a sale going on right now too. $100 off

The chip makes an incredible difference in the performance of the car. I have driven chipped and non chipped 2.0t's, and the difference is performance is absolutely there. (Don't even get me started on the Stage 3 large turbo vkit. ) The chip makes the car a lot more driveable, with better pickup and less throttle application needed to get where you are going. I do reccomend that if you get the car chipped, you also upgrade the diverter valve as well. I have the APR R1, and it is is great not only in performance, but it is maintenance free and has a lifetime warranty.

As far as brand goes, everyone has their preferred brand. I like APR for a variety of reasons. They have a nationwide dealer networ, fully stand behind their products, have a host of other APR branded parts to accompany the chip, have a telephone hotline that you can call, and are in my opinion the best balance of the chip between maximum power and driveability. The APR chip also offers features that the other companies do not, such as the ability to erase Check Engine Lights, different modes to change octane levels of the ECU depending on what situation you find yourself in. The APR chip is also a hidden system which means that it is virtually undetectable, and they do not modify your interior by adding controllers, buttons, holes, etc. like some companies out there. Everything is controlled right through the stalk. Last but not least, APR is having a sale on chips right now: http://www.goapr.com/products/ecu_upgrade_20tfsi_trans.html

You can't beat an almost 100 lb ft increase in torque for such a small amount of money.

Yes I am leaning towards APR. I just wanted to know if the difference in performance was substantial and it sounds like it is. I live about 3 hours north of Chicago and there are many APR dealers in that area, also one in Milwaukee. Thanks for the reply!

Nah she is cool with this kind of stuff. Especially considering I wanted a 2010 A4 Prestige..... We went the more "responsible" route and got the less expensive VW. Now she is not fussing too much on me wanting to do a couple mods.

heard a lot of good things about the big three; APR, REVO and GIAC. Just so happen to have all three here on island. Most likely going to choose APR as my buddy is the authorized dealer and the sale is pretty dope.
Is the diverter upgrade recommended for just the stage I flash? (07 2.0T- not sure if its the TSI or FSI yet)

Yes, a new diverter valve is strongly reccomended. I give the APR R1 valve two thumbs up. It looks great, improved the performance of the car, and it is a completely sealed maintenace free unit unlike the "other" brands. Did I mention it is also on sale?

Personnaly, I drive a Stage 1+ of Unitronic and I'm quite satisfied (550$ can). On the VWquebec forum's, there's one guy who bring his brand new GTI 2010 on the dyno, after having upgrade to APR Stage 1, and here are his numbers:

1s run: 218hp@5800 trm---- 261th@3500trm at the wheels,

2nd run: 214hp @ 5800trm------ 256 th @ 3500trm at the wheels,

I believe my Unitronic chip is similar to those numbers, and after a whole year driving it I'm very satisfied.

All I can say about the tuning is it is incredible! I figured it would add some performance but the performance increase is substantial and very noticeable. I am 100% satisfied I did the APR tune. Money well spent!:lol:

Seems to be a bit of confusion here regarding the software on the 09 Passat. APR's software is able to be flashed onto the ecu via the obdII port, but the 2010's require the ecu to be removed. As far as I am aware APR is the only company able to chip the 2010 and newer VAG cars. The 2010 and newer cars are still flashed, but rather than flashed via the obdII port the are bench flashed.

Also the FSI/TSI engines do not use the same stayle DV as the 1.8T or 2.7T engines. There were some versions of the stock DV in some of the 06's that had failures on stock engines, but I personally ran stage 2+ hpfp and had no issues.

With all that said... Jeremy I am glad the software upgrade is more that what you expected it to be.

help slow car

Hy all,

I am new here and I was hoping that you could help advise me as to the best course of action to take, I am about to purchase a 2006 Passat 1.6 liter engine (either the 1.6 L I4 or the 1.6 L I4 FSI, I am not sure which but probably the later). I live in Egypt and given the high taxes most cars are sold with less then adequate engine sizes to keep the prices down. Given that the passat is a relatively heavy car the 1.6 without any mods just wont cut it for me. So I was wondering what my options would be? could I possibly add a chip? would that improve things? how about hardware? turbo? supercharger? or combinations? I am not interested in racing the car, just to make the power/weight ratio of the car more balanced... and a little weekend fun thrown in
Thank you,
Sincerely yours
