Un oh, that is definitely not normal. Under warranty? Take it to the dealer for a look. :sad:

 

A bad Cat ?

 

Is it an oil burning smell? If so look for oil leak along backside/pass side of head or oil along driver's side engine under the intake manifold.

it does smell like oil.

as far as a bad cat, its a straight pipe to the exhaust, with no cat in the middle.

the muffler seems to make a "kink" sound now and then too...

 

maybe the valve cover gasket? the hood wouldn't be that hot because of the insulation.

 

Here's what I'd do (and have done): Get some Simple Green or Purple Power and totally degrease the engine a few times until it's spotless. Pop the cover off the valve cover (plastic with clips) and really clean the head. Also clean thoroughly under the intake manifold. Then watch for oil leaks to develop over time. You'll locate the source of oil burning easily. It's likely: Valve cover gasket, cam shaft half-seal, or a cracked breather hose and or PCV valve problem on driver's side.
