Timing Belt DIY???

Has anybody changed thier own timing belt/tensioner (on the 1.8T)? The local delearships are quoting $800 and $650, and a local independent says about $550 to do the job. Is this worth doing myself? Do you really have to remove the entire front end as I'm being told?

Do a search and find daddymatt's thread from when he replaced his timing belt. It's totally do-able by yourself. I did mine over the labor day weekend all by myself. Get the Haynes manual too, it has good pics and instructions.

Feel free to PM me if you have any additional questions. I don't keep CB5 up all day but I do usually check in a couple times a day.

That's pretty expensive. Gossett in Alpharetta has a flat price of $585 to change the timing belt/tensioner plus oil change (the 105,000 service).

It's a good DIY job as long as you are smart about it. Becareful with the A/C lines, Mark and double check your belt alignment after you install. Oh and you will need one LARGE socket. I want to say it is around the 1" size but don't recall the specific metric one you need to use. A long (read greater than 12" socket wrench) would be nice to turn the engine, but you can use a pipe extension for that.

It should take you and a buddy about 6-7hrs to do it all including an Oil Change, filter changes, etc, etc.
