Re: Switchblade Key (Smudga)

If you want the 2000 style Switchblade Key & Remote you need to get a remote with the number: HL0 1J0 959 753 F. And then you can just get a key cut at your dealer for $60 US.

If you want a 2001 and up style Switchblade Key & Remote that has a red LED that flashes when you press a button, you need to get a remote with the number: HL0 1J0 959 753 T. And then you can just get a key cut at your dealer for $60 US.

Image

And If your dealer says anything about them have to program your actual new key that they just cut, just ignore them, they don't know what their talking about. You do not need to program the key, just the remote. And you can program the remote by yourself from the instructions found somewhere in your '99 manual. It's the same way as programing a "banjo" style remote.

Hope I helped you out.

Re: Switchblade Key (mrgreek2002)

You can avoid having a new key being cut if you have an existing switchblade remote... the blade portion can be swapped by removing the locking pin at the base of the blades and exchanging them. Cost me $11 at the jeweler's repair counter to have T remotes from a Beetle become the keys for my 99.

Re: Switchblade Key (Scotaku)

i bought the HL0 1J0 959 753 T remote from that guy on ebay for $25 shipped. I didn't bid i just emailed (exoticmd@attbi.com) him my offer. I then had a key cut for $25 and had some fun with a dremel tool
Image
. I only got 1 key when i bought my car so that key copy was the missing link in being able to program the remote. (99 passat)

good luck!

ps. it was used

Re: Switchblade Key (Paradigm)

I don't think '99s have imobilizer, so no chip in the key.

I'm looking at my 2003 switchblade and there does not look like any chip in the key blank. I presume the chip is in the remote with the rest of the electronics.

What shape is your key blade in? Is it just the blade, or does it have a loop in the "non-business" end?

If you have the loop or a useless key fob half, keep reading.
Only talking about the key portion of the unit:
One method is to remove the VW logo by picking at it and prying it off--it's durable.* Underneath it is a #1 Phillips screw. Removing that screw lets you take apart the key portion of the unit. As you unscrew, the plastic case will open up along its seam. Once you do that, you'll see the chrome button sitting atop the the key blade's loop. Just switch out. You'll have to glue the logo back on.

* I found this out when "experimenting" with a hammer and a useless key portion. The logo just popped right off with nary a scratch or dent. Someday, I'll get around to posting pictures of "Death of a switchblade."

ya, i've got that immobilizer thing i think (2003).....those keys cost $100 a pop for dealer to order...geez..i haven't noticed a red blinking light btw when i use my key....am i blind? where is it or just not there in 2003?

UCIV6,

The LED is to the right of the trunk button. It flashes as long as you hold down any button. It's barely noticeable if you don't know it's there.

Yeah, you have the immobilizer. The "chip" is really a little piece of iron(??) or something, wrapped in thousands of copper windings. If you look inside the key-portion of the unit, you'll see a glob of epoxy resin(??), or something. The "chip" is inside that glob. Don't touch it. *That's* what we need the dealerships to program--not the alarm.

Ok...new angle

I have a 1998 1.8T with the huge key and huge remote. My dealership doubts it would work. Now come on...some of you have to have done this mod before and it has worked...right? I am sick of laying down on the floor and practicaly loosing my manhood when I have my keys in my pocket. I like the design much better as well...so...anyone have any experience with this?

:???:

Damm....the guy at ebay said that the key model is # HL0 1J0 959 753 T (up to 2001 model ), not HL0 1J0 959 753 AM (2001.5 and up), but he send me the #HL0 1J0 959 753 AM, so it doesn't work! I need to contact him for a refund or anyone want it?

I try to program it per the manual and it doesn't work. I guess that model is not for 1999 model B5, only B5.5.

Yeah, that does suck and it also happened to me the first time I got one off of ebay too. The second time I made sure and e-mailed the seller to please make sure you send me the T remote. And he did.

Hope you get it soon though. :)

Is there a way to get a key cut for a Euro spec 2000 Passat? I understand that USA dealers can't recognise our chassis (i.e. VIN) numbers so they can't cut a new key.

I have a broken key in one remote. The remote still works fine. Is it possible to get a key cut from the original key? If so, where?

#23 ·
My local dealership cut a copy using of one of my original keys as a master.

Note that there are 2 versions of keys:
- keys with a channel (or, center) cut, meaning the side of the key blade has a groove in it--this is what I have,
- keys with the cut on the edge (like a typical house key).

You just have to make sure the place has the right type of cutting machine.

My 99 has an imobilizer !

I thought about doing all whats been said and in th end I went to the dealer ! The key had to come from germany ! The remotes are generic and are programmed. When they did mine, they ( the dealer) had to get a code from the car,'fax it to VW (UK), get another code back ( only valid for that day and programe the new remote. Why would they and I need to do all this if it could be done another way ?

DCdave,

Thanks for the info. I have the key with the groove in the flat side, like yours. I need a favour. Can you ask your dealer if they know the address of a dealer in the Maimi area that will do this for me?

I live in Jamaica but get to Miami a few times per year.

Thanks.

There are some B5ers on this board from the Miami area who could help out better since they've surely dealt with local dealers directly.
From http://www.vw.com/dealerLocator/dealerResults?zip=33055&cnty=USA&dist=20&units=Mi, Miami area dealers include:
Esserman Volkswagen (305) 474-8989, 16825 N.W. 57th Avenue, Miami
Gunther Volkswagen (954) 797-1660, 1660 S State Road 7, Ft. Lauderdale
Esserman International Volkswagen (305) 477-6666, 10455 NW 12th St., Miami
Deel Volkswagen (305) 448-3335, 3673 Bird Road, Miami

VW policy is that all of its dealers to have the proper key cutting machine. So, any of those places would be able to help. The service charge is determined by each dealer.
