Rotor/pads install for dummies. Step by step info inside.

Im not sure if anyone done this yet, figured it would be nice since this Q gets asked alot. And we can also save our fellow B5ers $750 off dealer price.

PLEASE READ: Do at your own risk.
I make no guarantee regarding the above procedures and am not
responsible for any brake problems, accidents, etc.

Also please don't do this with jack holding your car up invest 10 bucks and do it safely!

This brake job was done on 1999 B5

ROTOR/PADS INSTALL

Front:

Tools needed:
-7mm allen key
-17mm ranch/rachet
-C clamp or large pliers
-jack stand (Autozone $10)

Parts needed:
-2 new rotors
-front brakepads
-brake quite
-neversieze

Step 1
Take off the wheel.
Also open the brake resavoir. Sometimes when you retrack the caliper it might overflow.
So put a rag around it also.

Step 2
Take the tension spring off

Step 3
Remove 2 black caps in the back off the caliper

Step 4
Remove 2 bolts, use 7mm allen

Step 5
Press against the rotor and caliper to loosen it

Step 6
Slide off the caliper

Step 7
Remove old brakepads

Step 8
Remove 2 bolts and bracket, use 17mm rachet

Step 9
Remove rotor, it should slide right off, if not use a hammer to tap on it here and there.

Step 10
Apply neversieze
Image


Step 11
Apply new rotor
Image


Step 12
Reattach the bracket
Image


Step 13
Retract the piston using big pliers or C-clamp
Image


Step 14
Apply brakequiet on the back of new brakepads
Image


Step 15
Apply brakepads, as shown in the picture

Step 16
Slide on the caliper
Image


Step 17
Reapply the hex bolts, you might want to torque these to 92ft/lbs. I didn't

Step 18
Replace the plastic caps
Image


Step 19
Replace the tension spring
Image


Done


Rear:

Tools needed:
-13mm ranch
-15mm ranch
-caliper retract tool http://www.autotoolexpress.com/reardisbrakc.html - VW tool is cheaper
you can also use needle pliers but it takes longer and its more PITA.

Parts:
-Rear rotors
-new brakepads

Note: You are going to need put something under front tires cause you cant have the E-brake on.

Step 1
Take the wheel off.
Also open the brake resavoir. Sometimes when you retrack the caliper it might overflow.
So put a rag around it also.

Step 2
Unscrew the caliper bolts using 13mm ranch and 15mm to hold it in place

Pull off the caliper

Step 4
Slide off the rotor, you do not need to remove the bracket, slide on new rotor.

Step 5
Retract the piston using either the tool or needle pliers. Screw and push clockwise.

Step 6
Apply brakequite to the back off the brakepads! See pic above in front brakes section.

Step 7
Apply brake pads

Step 8
Slide on the caliper and screw in the bolts.

DONE

PLEASE READ!!! Make sure you pump your brakes few times before driving!!!They should go down all the way the first time you step on them. Just pump them up.

Very nice writeup. Believe me, boys and girls, it's pretty easy to DIY, and save a lot for other mods.

I have a quick question...in the past when I've done brake work, I have typically replaced the springs, etc. Does the manual recommend the change, do new springs come with the pads, or if not, does anyone know if a hardware kit is available (part #, too, if you know)?

oh boy... here I go...

I was taking my car in to do all four brakes TODAY! (Zimms and Mintex)

now I'm thinking about doing it myself... Thank you Turbonium for making my next weekend a very greasy one!

Q: are there any special setting for the C brake? and what about pedal feel, is that directly related to the rotor/pad combo?

Im not exactly sure what you are saying here......whats a C brake?

Forgot VERY IMPORTANT!!!

Edit: Make sure you pump your brakes few times before driving!!!

I wouldn't want you driving thru the back of your garage or into a tree.......

passaturbonium: you left you step 1.5 in the rear brake: relase the parking brake.

Otherwise, you'll never remove the pads.

As often as I've done this, I've never taken the time to do all of the pics like you've done. Good work.

I meant the hand brake, is there anything I have to do (besides releasing it

) after the job is done? setting the tension, pulling cables, etc...

nope. don't have to mess with the parking/hand brake after you're done. have fun.

oh and if anybody is using the non plated aftermarket rotors e.g. zimmermans, you might want to paint the hub with high temp paint to avoid that oh so glamorous rusted rotor look.

Since the hydraulic circuit (MC, brake lines, slave cylinders, calipers) was left closed for the above procedure, bleeding is not necessary. It'll be slightly easier to seat caliper pistons with the cap off the brake fluid reservoir though.

However you'll notice that after installation of new front & rear pads, the reservior level has risen back to where it should be. This is why it's always the best practice to look for fluid leaks (instead of adding more fluid) if the reservior gets more than 1/2-3/4 inch low.

I heard someone talk about taking the center console apart the release the e-brake line or something, that does not apply here?

Question: Why aren't the back brakes exactly like the fronts as far as assembly? Is there a specific reason, or do they just like to make things hard??

excuse the ignorance, once you retract the piston does stay that way for reassebly? Great instructions by the way I've been looking for something like this for a long time. Now to print it for a rainy day.
