OK, I tried code 00134 on my 2000 1.8T & GIAC.
Here's my experience:

In Auto mode it seems to do less hunting at
highway speeds of 75 to 90 mph. But, it's a
bit rough shifting when driving normally around town.

In Tiptronic mode it made nodifference.
It still downshifted at highway speeds when the slightest
amount of throttle was applied.

My thoughts? Not happy with it. I'll try 00124 next, or
possibly 00010.

BTW, OakHillVariant.
My car is a 2000, and it not only states that the stock code is
00104 per Bentley, but it showed up as such on my VAG-COM.
Though you misht want to update that in your info.
Either way, thanks for finding this info for us!

Can I do this mod with just the shareware version of VAG-COM and the ODBTool from ODBTool.com?
Regarding VAG-COM, Ross-Tech's website says that there are no shareware limitations in the automatic transmission section of the software. Actually, I find that a bit surprising.

Go here http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/tour/scm_screen.html and click on the button marked "02 - Auto Trans.". Then look to the bottom of the screen.

Regarding ODBTool, here's what Ross-Tech has to say from http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/faq_3.html#OtherAdp. See the part I highlighted. If you already own the ODBTool, then it won't cost you anything to try it.
Q: Can I use an Interface adapter that came with another software package?
Yes. Any interface adapter works with VWTool or VDS-PRO should work. In addition, the ISO-only interface adapter that Alex Peper ships with his Vehicle Explorer OBD-II software package will work. Alex's "combination" adapters will not work with VAG-COM. Most other "OBD-II" adapters will not work. Lastly, the interface adapters supplied with the German Posicon software that many VW and Audi OTS's have access to will work. The VAS-6103 cable that should now be available at every VW/Audi dealership works with most control modules in most cars, but won't work with some ECUs. If you have some other adapter, simply try it, you can't hurt anything.
Lastly, see this post from Audiworld. It sounds like it can work. http://forums.audiworld.com/qclubflorida/msgs/8202.phtml

My car: 2000 1.8T with APU engine

I tried to recode the TCM and found my stock code was "00003". It wouldn't accept "00104", "00124", "00134" :( I hope I did it right - used the "recode" function.

Any one figured out how to do the sport coding for this stock s/ware code? Or do I already have it. My tip is quite responsive in auto mode.

Any ideas from APU (Euro spec) B5ers?

Yes, I'd also like to hear from any Euro spec folks.

As mentioned in my original post, these mods are based upon data for US Market Passats. I don't really know what non-US vehicles are capable of, and would be glad to hear any other information, positive or negative, conclusive or inconclusive, from the world-wide market.

Regards, OakHillVariant

I tried this last night - with the help of an Audi guy who owns a VAG-Com - on my '99 1.8T AEB and I have to say that I don't feel any difference. From what I read in my Bentley I don't think there is a Sport Mode on the non DBW Passat sold in the US and Canada.

My transmission would accept two different codes, 00000 and 00010, but the car drives the same with either code. The table on TCM Coding in the Bentley says that the 00010 code is for cars "NOT IN USA OR CANADA". Since my trannie accepted the code, I left it there to give it a longer trial period, but after taking the back roads to work today I am giving testimonial that the transmission is completely unchanged by this recoding, in both Tip and Auto shifting modes. And I agree with the statement made earlier that only OLD STRATEGY Tip operation exists in the non-DBW cars.

This is based on my experience with my car, so others should try for themselves and decide if they feel a difference, but it looks like this Mod is for B5.5s only, at least for cars made for North America.

the dread from my understanding change your code to 00013, I would also try 00113 and 00103 and see what happens. I originally used a different code and there was a difference not very much mind you. I think my original code was better than the one being recommended but I have a eurospec car, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Wal,

I'll try those codes. Which one worked for you? Did you see my post to you re. your SMIC vents in front front fender lining?

If you don't believe there is a difference with the non-DBW cars just do a little test. I wasn't really sure it did anything either until we tested it a little bit.

Run in auto mode (non sport) at about 25mph, I think you should be in 4th gear at this point. Now slowly roll into the throttle like you are going to pass someone. The rpms will increase and eventually it will shift down into third gear.

Now change to sport mode. Doing the same test the transmission will shift down into third for a few seconds then right down to second gear. If you just floor it you'll activate the kick down switch and won't tell a difference.

The sport mode is more for point and shoot driving like in traffic or something.

CRD is correct on the tranny code locations... you can get the serial # off the VAG-COM, on the opening screen of the module (boxes with all the text.)
Sorry it took so long.

Here is the reading I have for my TCM.

VAG Number: 8D0 927 156 AT
Component: AG5 01V 2.8I5V USA 3132
Soft Coding: 00132 (This is obvious here.)
Shop #: WSC 05311

Tried with the 00132 code with my 00 4 motion!.., Damn. that thing dont' downshift on me any more in tip mode.,., GREAT.,.,., thanks man

Many thanks OakHillVariant  ! OBDTool guy also confirms its do-able. Tally-Ho!

re: sports mode + old strategy

Hi All

Just purchased my Passat - after upgrading (?) from a GTI.
Anyway did this recoding and it now works the way I wanted it to. :). Especially since I've only driven manuals before.

BTW, the stock code was 00103 - don't know if thats unique to us here in South Africa but unlikely since we import our Passats.
Changed it to 00133 (didn't accept 00134) and now have sports mode and old strategy tipshift.
Don't know if I'm imagining it but kickdown in auto mode is now much more fun

For those who wishes to get the vag-com for less, you can buy the cable for as cheap as $70 or $80 for the K2. Shipping is $6 via USPS.

I've looked into making it myself, but all the parts alone would cost about $60, so for $10 more, you can get something that's made by the pro's and guaranteed to work.

I got a tip chip installed and the only real benefit I see/feel is in tip mode. When you initialize the trans controler with the vagcom the numbers pop up 00000. It doesn't feel any different then stock in regular D.

Don't do that to me...... I'm desparate to try out the Tip recode. Why do you think I bought the cable. I also need to dig out my old PC and make it run windows by the time the cable arrives.

If I get the caliper paint kit on early Saturday, I'll give you a ring. Email me your# and driving directions, please.

Transmission Code 00134
(Old Strategy + Sports Mode) USA Front Wheel Drive (FWD)
Anyone try this on a MY2000 tranny? I could only get the 00124 code to take for the Tip Old Strategy (which is FANTASTIC), but VAG won't take the 00134 code for sports mode combo... :suspicio:

I think it's possible to get both, anyone having luck with it?
