So I want to replace my strut mounts and shock mounts and someone told me that they have a bearing inside them that i should replace and when i order them i should replace the bearing too

is this true because all my local auto parts stores sells them but without the bearing and they cant seem to be able to get the bearings too its just the rubber peice theyre able to get.

and btw i drive a 98 vw passat 1.8t GLS model

if they are like my 01.5, then the front upper strut mount is just a rubber piece, no bearings that I'm aware of.

the rear upper mount should be one full assembly consisting of a metal piece with the bushing already inside of it, again, no bearings that I'm aware of unless it's part of the rear piece with the bushings but that should all come together as one piece.

not sure if this info matches with a 98 1.8t, but i believe that the b5 and b5.5 fwd suspension setups are identical, with the exception of springs between a 1.8 and 2.8.

My 1999 upper front mount is just hard rubber with no bearing. I'm guessing whoever told you there is a bearing was thinking of a different suspension design. Possibly a MacPherson strut design?

Ours is a four control arm design with a spring-over-shock.

There has been many a reference over the years to #2 in the below pic to be a "upper strut bearing" even though it contains no actual bearing. Probably a result of people coming into the B chassis realm from the A-chassis (jetta/Golf) where it is called an upper strut bearing. It's an upper strut mount for us.

haha alright cool thanks guys I just got really confused after he told me

" yeah they do have a bearing and you need that too so make sure either you buy the kit or you get the bearing too "

so i didnt want to order them without a bearing if they had had the bearing and get the wrong ones so i wanted to ask you guys for the help first thanks guys i guess ill go order them today!

VW Halogen Fluid is rated "lifetime". Flushing it for new is a waste of good money (unless you track the car). I know a guy that was built to stage-11 and he used the original factory Halogen fluid without any problems.

Light coming from the headlights travels at roughly 186,300 miles per second. Even if the fluid is old and the light is only moving at 184,000 m/s, it's still way above your cars top speed.

The point is, if you ever reach near-absolute zero conditions, your light won't be able to keep up with your car and you'll end up with light soaking into the cabin. If you're doing raunchy stuff inside (as I always am) the outside world will be able to see your devious sex acts since the interior would effectively become lit up. Not only that but it's hard to do said acts while playing "You Look Better With the Lights Off" if you got light slapping you in the face.
And I call BS on the stage 11 with factory halogen fluid. You would have rainbows flying off your car if you didn't replace the fluid with some quality fairy tears

What VagGuy says in his first post - #2 in the attached picture. I replaced mine when I installed new dampers a couple of thousand miles ago. The originals with about 236,000 mis appeared to be still serviceable. However, new "bearings" were so much cleaner with firmer rubber.
