Another man's trash is another man's treasure...

Rochacha couldn't quite get his Dawes MBC to work in his car, so I bought it to see what the fuss was about ;).

Single best most, period.

The installation takes a little time, those hose clamps suck...but there is a trick to them. I replaced both of the WG and TN vacuum lines with the extra HTS line I had lying around.

After a few test runs, and realizing that I had it set on 3 PSI, I made a few adjustments.

The cool thing was, even at part throttle in low gear @ 3 PSI max felt MUCH smoother and stronger than stock.

After adjusting the MBC I'm now dialed in just around 9-11 PSI. Rusty was right though, the thing with the MBC, the gas pedal is like an on/off switch. Normal cruising isn't really affected, but once you mash the pedal, the car throws you into the seat and is off. It's not a bad thing, but it'll take some getting used to ;).

For all you non-chipped AEBs, do this, NOW! For the 40-50 dollars you'll spend on this, it's worth every cent. Also, once you do get chipped, you can use the MBC to limit spikes, so it won't go to waste.

Well, after my 60 mile trip, I'm happy to say that it still drives perfectly.

Although, the one thing I have noticed is that under medium acceleration, if I let off the gas I get a stutter...I've heard of this before but I don't remember where.

in case anybody was wondering what the difference between the basic and hybrid dawes MBC are, i eamiled them yesterday and got a reply today
Michael,
Thank you for your interest in our products! The Hybrid model uses a synthetic material in the ball/spring mechanism, which increase response. It also has a polished seat for better sealing. The basic model uses a heavier, steel ball. Both work as well or better than anything else on the market, but the Hybrid adds a bit quicker spool time.
Please feel free to ask any other questions that you may have.

Regards,
Darren Dawes

I agree

I'm on day 3 right now, and I've got my 60 mile commute ahead of me so today should be the real test ;).

I think right now I'm somewhere between 9-11 lbs, my guage doesn't always zero out completely at shutoff, so I assume that will throw off the readings as well so I'm somewhere in that range.

MBC's rock on a cable-throttle car.

bass lover - if you've only run on it for one day, you may find after another day or two (after the fuel trims adjust) that it starts cutting out on you at max boost, and you may need to turn it down a pound or so.

That's what would happen to me anyway - I'd make an adjustment and it would run perfect for about a day, then I'd have to back off two days later. The fuel trims will not be denied! lol...

Wow, my head is spinning a bit after reading Rochacha's post. What I understood was really interesting. If nothing else I may get a MBC to limit my spikes. I'm running the n75j with my k04 and would like the extra assurance I'm not spiking too hard. I need a vag to set up the boost levels though don't I. My cheap ass really needs to buy one.

I'm the one Bass_lover1 got the MBC from. Here's my thread when I tried the MBC in my '04 AWM.

http://www.passatworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=190681

It summarizes a lot of info about using MBCs, what to log on VAG-Com, what to look out for re: fueling, ways to quench boost spikes on chipped cars, etc.

My problem, as you'll see from the graphs is that the ECU on an AWM will close the throttle plate if actual boost exceeds requested boost by 300 mbar or so. So, I got a rapid spike in boost, followed by a fairly sharp dropoff. I understand that with an AEB, the boost can be held.

Good luck!

very curious about this too. i have a 99 with about 113,000 miles. with cone filter diverter valve and i have a boost gauge installed to check the psi. is this a good idea to do it at this mileage? just lookin for something to make my baby quicker for the time being. lookin to get a k04 in the future. someone please educate me about this MBC deal. heard alot about it

As long as you know to take it easy, and not try to crank 20 PSI out of this (it wont work at all, but you get the idea).

After only a day of having it at 11PSI, it's an awesome experience. Hopefully tomorrow I can do a little testing with my Vag-Com and see where I'm at w/ fueling and timing.

you can read this thread here:

http://www.passatworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=105475

but basically, install the mbc, and slowly raise the boost 1-2 psi, then log WOT 3rd gear runs, block 2, 20, 31. make sure timing pull (block 20) is in the low single digits, and block 31, front o2 sensor (1st set of #'s) are at least .875 from about 4000rpm to redline.

I also have a '99 AEB K04 with a GIAC chip but not PC16 and 310 injectors. I see for the PC16 upgrade AWE recommends an FMIC. Did you also do this? I have the same "lag" between 2-3K rpm.
I don't have the FMIC but even in 5 degree weather it lags the same. I know I'm being picky, it isn't that big of a "lag" but it is noticeable. Maybe a high flow cat is next, I don’t know.
