So running rough with misfire cylinder 1 code for the last week or so but it is intermittent seems more obvious when engine is warm and will get better if I turn off a/c. Possibly tied to engine load? Anyways replaced the coil pack and cleared the code with vagcom but it is back on the new pack. Decided to go check ICM and when testing with resistance mode from pin 3 on the input I get no continuity on any output pin!!! I know that I am testing the right pin but might I be missing anything? Also if the ICM was that dead the engine wouldnt run at all right?

TIA

I have a '99 1.8T, so I have some experience with this kind of stuff, obviously. So if you switch coil packs and the misfiring followed that coil pack, then that one coil pack is your problem. Get a new coil pack ASAP and instal it in the cylinder that's giving you a misfire and a code.

Done that already. With new coil pack still cylinder 1 misfires which led me to think icm but I am confused that I get no continuity through it b/c afaik that means no coils should be firing.

EDIT: to be fair I first swapped in a used but working coil pack and went ~ 2 days without the code or rough running but then it came back. Then swapped in a NEW pack 2 days ago and now running like hell with a/c on and with a/c off very hesitant and sometimes jerky. You can definitely feel the misfires but if a/c is on the car feels like it will die and runs horribly.

OK, if you've done that already, then it's got to be your ICM. I've never had any other part to replace for a misfire other than a coil pack or an ICM in the cars 11 years.

Have you also checked your plugs? I've never had a bad plug ever, but you never know.

plugs are good gapped and torqued. SO overnighted icm on thursday it is I guess. have you ever heard of my current ICM's issue though? Scares me that no output pin has continuity with pin 3 on the input. Cannot find any thread with that. Also cannot understand how it runs at all with that.

I'm having a problem with the #1 cylinder misfiring. I swapped ignition coils and plugs and still get the misfire on #1 only. I've read up on the icm going bad. But in most all cases its the #2 cylinder. Would that still be a reason or is there something else that can cause the misfire? There's no oil on the plugs and I listened for the injectors and both are clicking away. How can I test the icm to see If its the cause? I'm pretty motor illiterate but I can handle tasks once I know what I'm looking for. Also read up on a "pcv" valve?
