In search of a perfect running BPY for my B6 Passat. My engine had oil starvation causing the cam chain tensioner to break and ruin the whole engine.

looking for an engine with lower miles..(under 100k)

please let me know what you have or if I should attempt a rebuild.

you sure it was the oil starvation? Because I just bought an 06 passat 2.0 BPY on Wednesday with a broken piece from cam follower which broke the chain and the chain tensioner, resulting in one bent intake valve, but nothing too serious. Already took it apart, ordered parts, will assemble back together by the end of the next week.

Broken chain tensioner didn't likely ruin the whole engine.

I just bought an 06 Passat 2.0T a couple months ago with the exact same issue.
I have no idea how experienced you are mechanically.
I fixed mine myself, but not without some frustration. Had to buy a Hazet socket for the head bolts, and make an adapter for the valve spring compressor.
I worked on cars for a living up until 1988. Cars are wayyyy more complex now.
Spent less than 400 in parts. The dealer estimate to fix was $4000.

Mafiaboy, it is not likely you bent just one valve. There are two each of intake and exhaust valves per cyl. If one bent, so did the other. Good news is, they are sold in pairs.

I am positive. How i know is when i was seating my valves, only one would seat half way, the ground part was only on a half of the valve seat, while all others had a perfect 2mm ground ring all around.

Unless you're buying a factory new engine, your not going to get an engine that could have this same issue at some point in the future. I'd look into a rebuild, but weigh that against the price of buying a new car, which it might be cheaper to buy a new car, swap the parts over from your old car, then part it out.

Or perhaps it's time for an upgraded motor. Rebuild yours with bigger pistons, cams, etc.

If you had some upper engine starvation that caused the tensioner to fail you might be better with a rebuild. If the starvation happened because you didn't have oil than basically everything that moves in that engine is messed up, and you will need a new engine.
