How long does it take you to change your oil?

So my girlfriend thinks that I am retarted because it takes more than 30 minutes to change my oil. She says that it should take no more that 30 min. to change the oil because the grease slingers at the quicklube places can change the oil in less 30 min. My rebuttle is that if you want it done right it takes longer than 30 min.

My question is how long does it take you to change the oil? And pleasedon't post that it takes you 20 minutes when you use an extractor.

It takes me about 20 to 30 minutes to change mine without an extractor. Tell your girlfriend that it takes longer at home because you give a damn about making sure you get as much of the old oil out as you can and less about getting the next car into the bay.

Also remind her that just because something is quick, doesn't mean its better - give her a good example if she needs it.

It takes me around 1 hour, because while I'm under there I inspect my CV boots, suspension components, brake hoses, fuel and evap lines, transmission, backside of the engine, exhaust components, heat shields...

I take my sweet-ass time. Its my car, I take good care of it. What does some grease money at Jiffy Lube care about my car? You're lucky if he takes off the belly pan to change the oil. They're just as likely to drain the oil and let it ooze all over the pan, and forget half the fasteners.

I allocate a 2-hour time slot for a DIY oil change, but spend most of the time doing other work around the house or car, while the oil is draining. 30 minutes of actual work sounds about right. I can change the oil in the Dodge Stratus in half that much time, because the oil filter hangs next to the drain plug, and there is no belly pan to remove and replace. The Audi A4 goes a bit quicker than the Passat, because I don't have to pull BOTH the throttle body air duct and the coolant recovery tank to cram in the world's largest automotive oil filter. (I used to change 06A-115-561B filters without disassembling anything. It's a little different with the Purolator L40316 monstrosity.)

Ditto. I like to get the oil real warm so it will drain better, but still like to let it "drip" for a half hour or more. This also gives that monster filter time to "cool down" before removing. Like you, I do something else while it's draining and waiting for the filter to cool off - usually I go inside and eat lunch.

John, I take it you like that Purolator as much as I do. Best filter for the money, bar none, since it's practically free. More money to spend on oil (grin).

Well it took me over an hour today but it was the first time on my Passat, and I had a bit of an accident :biglaugh: But it got done right...

Ask her how long it takes her to make a sandwich and then tell her it should take her less than that because the "sandwich artists" at Subway can do it in x minutes...

Sounds like your gf has a thing for the Jiffy Lube guys ;)

It should take the better part of an hour, including cleanup. Of course, only about 20 minutes is actual hands-on. The rest is waiting for the oil to drain and seeing how many beers you can pound. And that latter part is optional.

I'm another one that takes my sweet time, at least a half hour to drip out, during that time, I'll get a cold beer, check the other fluids, vac lines, and under the car. I also find it a good time to give the motor a good wipe down with some Simple Green. All in all at least an hour if not more

I think allot of us could change oil allot faster than we do, I just enjoy spending time with my car, even if it's just something as simple as an oil change.

The 1.8 takes 30-40 minutes - and that includes some underbody inspection time. The bulk of the time is getting the stupid belly pan on and off, and then the oil filter on and off without getting oil all over (I use the bottom of a Windshield Washer jug, and have found it easiest to do it from the bottom of the car.

The 2.8 takes about 20 minutes, and over half of that is the stupid belly pan.

As a point of commentary, I like the fact that the 2.8 oil filter is so easily accessible. What I have noticed though is that the threads on the filter are much shorter than the 1.8 (spins off in about 2 revolutions vs 4-5). What I worry about is the fact that it does sit so conveniently low - and damage to the filter if I should ever hit something.

Just my thoughts

A little over one hour using an extractor, but I check a lot of different things, too, as well as record the lot numbers of the filter and oil.

I am sure I could get it done in under 30 minutes, but why rush it? I enjoy the time.

I've watched the quick lube places get done in under 15 minutes. They put the drain plug back in while oil is still coming out (albeit slowly).

Roughly 45 minutes. And most of it is for letting as much oil drain as possible. It only takes me 10-15 minutes to do the work, sans oil extractor, but I don't want that crap in my oil pan.

The next time you change your oil, bring her out there with you and show her what you are doing. And then if she still nags you, tell her you have a very special car and it needs some TLC and if she doesn't stop nagging you, you'll spend more time sleeping with the car than her.

But seriously, take most of the advice you've been given and tell her you spend the time to make sure it is done right. It's not that you can't do it in under 30 minutes, it's that for you to be satisfied that it was done correctly it will take as long as it takes.

Thanks for all of the good advise. The gf by no means was bitching, nagging, or complaining but commented on how much time it takes me to change the oil. She just finds it amusing how anal I am when I change the oil. I would have to say that I am in the same boat with everyone else in taking there sweet ass time to check over everything top off all of the fluid if need be and make sure that every drop of oil is out of the pan.

On a bit of a side note I showed her the thread last night and she laughed her ass off. Her favorite post where from scottpassat and quality_sound.
