few weeks ago my friend rolled his '86 Yoda pick up truck on Highway 17 coming back from Santa Cruz, and bought a used '88 4runner. He just put a new set of wheels and exhaust on the truck few days before he rolled it, so today he asked me to come with him to get the new tires mounted on his 4runner and go to the muffler shop to swap the exhaust. So first we went to the 4weelparts in san Jose, to get new rims and tires, he ended up getting brand new tires (31" super swampers) no questions asked for free because the old ones were damaged!! 4WheelParts deserves thumbs up for that, because they knew that he rolled the truck and how the tires got damaged, and still honored the warranty with out a word  ... than we went to the muffler shop to swap the exhaust from old truck, and as curious as I am, I started asking questions. Asked how much it would be to install a Glass Pack in my passat, he said $84 parts and labor, so I quickly gave him the keys and said ... do it ... a minute later he said that he does not have any new glasspacks on stock but he has this 23" pack which was installed, but than removed right after, and he would install it for $65 out the door ... so my mouth lit even brighter :D.
We left both my passat and his 4runner at the shop and bored as we ware ... we went to the Mitsubishi Dealership right behind the building, to check out the that supped up WRX that we saw over the net !! which is pretty nice. A car sales man quickly came out so we put on serious faces, and asked if he has the keys ... he quickly brought it, and we started playing around with the car ... the engine was stock, but it had body kit, and full aftermarket interior, so we asked if we could take it for a spin, so as cool as the sales person was, he agreed, he already knew that we are not going to buy the car, but because my extended knowledge on turbo and WRX's, he gave me the keys :D .... it was the first time that I drove a WRX and I must say that I'm pretty impressed. Power wise I did not feel any more power/acceleration than with my chipped passat, but the whole driving experience is great!! the car sure likes to rev high, the suspension is just perfect, clutch is a little heavy but very sportish!!! I just love the seating position, great view from the driver seat on the road, but the steering wheel blocks the gauges a little, but over all, I would buy the car if I was in the market. I took it for few spins around the block, and gave my buddy the wheel, he did a power slide and span all 4 wheels on the first U-turn which kinda freaked out the sales guy, but it was all right, he was coo'.
after the test drive we checked out the Evo's VIII and the 6-speed special edition, we did not test drive it but it is defiantly one hell of a car !!!! it just looks mean !!!
... anyway back to the resonator :biglaugh: when we came back to the shop, my friends 4runner was all done ... but my car was still on the lift, on closer inspection I still saw the suitcase still attached ... as I walked inside the guy told me that the 23" glass pack will not fit in there, but recommend that I just cut the thing off and run a straits pipe ... he said that he will do it for $25 out the door :Yikes: so I just gave him a big thumb up. It took 10 min to cut and weld a new pipe, and told me to start the engine ... and holly crap does it sound nice :Yikes: at first it was petty quiet but once I warmed the engine up, that thing just opened up !! now its pure beef! not too loud, but sounds like I have a full 2.5" exhaust in it ... it really sounds like a BMW M3 but maybe not as loud !! its a very mellow low note at idle, and at acceleration it growls so low that you can feel the vibration in your ears !! it sound perfectly and I would not change it a bit!!!
on the way home my buddy was sitting at the light right next to a riced out civic with one of those big fart cans, so he just started playing with his loud truck exhaust and the civic with his fart can, after a little battle my buddy pointed at my car (I was right behind him) so naturally I just gave it a go, raved high and shut the civic up :biglaugh: it really sounded like a M3 exhaust !! well, we got on a highway, and the thing was just screaming while accelerating, but at cursing speeds (50-80mph), it sounds just like stock :). I cannot comment a whole lot about performance because I'm still at the wow factor, but my butt dyno says that there is something going on (we'll see in few days), I noticed that there is less backpressure building up (boost gauge drops faster), but it did not affect my turbo spool time.
this $25 is the best $25 spend yet!!! dirt cheap, and made my car sound like it means business

if anyone is San Jose area needs a good muffler shop, than go check out Michael's Mufflers at 2221 Stevens Creek, San Jose, (408)842-9338 they have the best prices I have seen yet, and are really cool to deal with, I had great time waiting for my car to get done.

also if anyone needs a stock resonator than I have one ... but it weights a tone

well, I say that this is was a pretty cool way to end the year ... now I'm out to a party

Happy New Year everyone!!!

Hey sausagerocket
I'm thinking about taking the resonator out too.....does it make it too loud in the cabin? Can't do it if it will just make my wife complain:)
no not at all :) ... I kind of whish it was louder :biglaugh:

what I noticed is that the exhaust is pretty quiet when the engine is cold, but once it worms up (2 min of driving) it will open up and give a nice deep note. I just love the sound from the dead stop :biglaugh:

it does not cost much, in my case, next to nothing :D ... so if you are thinking, than you dont have much to lose

I did few searches on the issue, (press search and write "Glass Pack" or "Resonator") it seems that some people get a lot of droning with a straight pipe, and recommend getting a 18" glass pack.

I have no droning with my car, and I absolutely love the sound, but that might be different with every car. Someone also said that straight pipe will get louder over time, so I'm kind of looking forward to that :)

btw. Daytona, I have a 1.8T

I got the resonator replaced with a pipe on my V6 tonight. Sounds really good, kinda drones at speed though, but it's no big deal to me for 25 dollars. :) If I decide I really cant stand the slight droning I can get a glasspack put in there for 56 bucks. Overall I really like it, but time will tell. :)

Oh and he said 20 bucks, but I gave him 25 to be nice.

SausageRocket started a revolution!! I had a straight pipe welded on my passat tonight (1.8T engine). From the time I started it up till the time I put her in the garage, I smiled at the sound of the engine. I am in love with the sound- It does have a drone around 3k rpm, but I love it (it is definately tolerable-- if you have the windows up and some music on- it is near stock levels)!! Like Sausage Rocket said, the sound resembles an M3 (e36 body... not the newer raspy E46).... I think for under $50 it is a must do mod... (if you don't mind the sound of a full 2.5 or greater exhaust system) :)

P.S. for a little added fun- fold the rear seats down- you'll swear you have a TT system!!!

hahahhahah :D ... o man :biglaugh:

it does sound nice, doesn't it :D ... I find myself driving with my windows down at 40 degree weather wearing gloves for the past 3 days, cause it sounds so goooood !!! :
cant get enough of it, its like pure sex for my ears :D all my friends love it, and makes most of the civic owners cry,

ps. there is some droning at higher RPMs, but its what makes my nipples hard
so if you have a wife that does not appreciate euro exhaust than you might get bitched at a little, but I think its well worth it :biglaugh:
