g38 or g68 transmission speed sensor

which sensor tells the transmission when to shift?

This page tells me something but not to sure if this applies to an 2001 passat glx v6 automatic trans

01m - TDIClub Forums

G38 senses the speed of the sun gear shell inside the trans. It’s in the “middle” of the trans right next to the cooler. For a simple understanding of how it is used, just remember that the sun gear shell is stopped for 2nd and 4th and the speed with which it stops and starts, as the shifts, helps the computer determine apply rate of the clutches. In other words it uses this sensor to help control shift feel.

G68 senses the speed of the output of the trans. This is the one under the trans mount with a long harness on it. Obviously, with a transmission that is computer controlled, the computer needs to know what speed the car is going to make up shifting and down shifting decisions. It also compares this sensors signal with engine rpm to determine if the trans is making the correct gear ratio, or if the TCC is slipping.

G22 is on top of the differential section of the transmission and is used for instrument cluster signal, which is what I would normally call a vehicle speed sensor.

ALSO major thing here where is the correct sensor located on my car? Specifically the one that tells the transmission when to shift, possibly the g68? Could anyone provide a picture? i ordered the bentley manuals, but cannot wait for them to arrive to fix my issue. No codes from vag-com

vag com shows that my transmission temp is (roughly) 155 deg C. when the temp gets this high then shifting becomes strange. earlier postings of mine talk about this issue. i thought it might be one of the speed sensors causing the shifting issues, but it seems that it is related to the heating. when the transmission temp gets over 100 deg C then the shifting issues start. by shifting issues i mean the car shifts at higher RPM. No codes for transmission found and O2 S1B2 and S2B2 open are the codes coming from the engine. no other DTC's returned. Any ideas on this one?

shifting occurs at high rpm after i have driven the car for awhile. like earlier and in another posting it occurs when the temp of the trans is high. outside of normal temp range maybe?

The 01M is not the same as your 01V, so the sensor designations may be different. Nevertheless, the final-drive speed sensor must be what is used to determine shift points, along with throttle position, etc. But as Tom said in another of your similar postings, keep all your questions concise and in one place, and if there are other unrelated problems with your car, ask about those on another posting for best response.

yes i just thought that something would be similar. i see from reading the bentley books where the differences are. Any ideas what might be causing the trans to overheat? I think that the overheating and the shifting are related. the shifting is a symptom of the overheating. when i fix the overheating the the shifting issue will go away

What makes you think it is overheating ?
Heat is not causing your problem, you say it starts at 100 degrees C, that is certainly not hot.
If it was overheating, it should log a fault code.
A better description of what you are experiencing might help. Sometimes mine will hold a gear to 6,000RPM.
Specific answers to questions, with details would help.

when the car is cold, fresh start, the car will shift normally around 2k rpm. after the car is warm, not engine warm, but something else. after i have driven it awhile the shifting becomes erratic. it will shift at progressively higher rpm's, 3rd after 4k and 4 after 4k and never tried for 5th, always used tiptronic to set the gears after it starts to act funny. hooked it up to vag-com and no trans codes show. i monitored it with vag-com and saw that the shifting issues start after roughly 100 degress C has been reached. the temp will reach 155 deg C, never really saw it go higher than that. i used vag-com from ross-tech to watch the trans temp. also there is a smell like something burning after the shifting issue begins which i think is the trans overheating and burning the trans fluid. I have an 5 speed automatic front wheel drive 01V trans. i replaced the trans output speed sensor that is located after removing the oil pan. i also replaced the filter while it was removed. i am using Castrol transmax fliud in the car and the problem has had this problem before i started messing with it. i thought the shifting problem would go away if i replaced a sensor which it didn't and thats when i noticed that the trans temp is going so high! so i think that the trans overheating is causing the trans to shift weird.

This would normally be higher, more like 3k RPM.

Please explain what this means, and what is a while ?

This could be an engine problem.
Do a full scan with VCDS (All modules) and post the codes.

actually the shifting occurs closer to 3k but below 3k when its cold, sat over night.

I know the engine is warm because the temp gauge on the cluster shows 190ish. also vag-com shows the engine temp is 172, roughly. after the engine warms up and i have driven it for a couple of miles, then the trans does its shifting thing. Something that i just noticed is that the trans fluid temp jumped from 96 deg C to 155 deg C with no steps in between. the temp gradually built up to 96 then made that high jump to 155.
