I've been using the steel jack that came out of my old B4 VR6 Passat (RIP) as a floor jack (for tire rotations). Same design as the OE jack, but made of steel -vs- aluminum.

B4 Passats are getting a bit rare in the salvage yards...you can pick up a spare B4 jack for $25 or less if you look hard enough. Fits in the OE location too.

Thats exactly what the jack I acquired looks like. Dont know if it's the same though.

It's raining madly outside. Guess I can't put my wheels on today. :(

Take a look around for a jackpad that'll fit, or even make one yourself from a 2x4 or something dense. You'll want something to lock it onto the jackrail under the car. With how big that lift pad is, it could allow the seam to fold over (happened on a friend of mines jetta...).

Good purchase though, post some pics when you get your wheels on ;)

I'll try and find something so I can use the stock jack point. Would it just sit in the "cup" of the jack? Either way, until then I can just slide the jack under the car and use the subframe "tab".

Yes, thats what I do for the fronts and its easier to place the jack stands under the car that way.

The link shows that jack as an SUV jack, will it still work on a lowered passat? doesnt look like it would. $39 seems awfully cheap. I dont know that I should get one THAT inexpensive, as you usually get what you pay for. At the same time I dont want a $300 snap-on jack. I read a LOT of complaints about the Sears jacks.

And what's special about an aluminum racing jack? Light weight?
It's an SUV jack because it has an extension piece, which detaches, and it's 3 ton. Otherwise it's a normal car jack. I figgured if it's rated for 6000 lbs it's should be safe for use with a Passat.

My car is on an Eibach Pro-Kit for a 1.3 inch drop and the jack goes under easily.

If you look at the pic you can see the seam on the lower end of the upright pipe where it separates from the jack. That's where the black saddle drops in or the pinch weld adapter I use.

The good part would be if it doesn't fit under your slammed car you can just take it back to Home Depot!

Lol f that extension, that's hilarious, I wouldn't trust that

It's your life you're playing with when you get under your vehicle, safety first. A 3 ton jack is a good choice, and same weight jackstands are a must!
I don't use an extension on a Passat... And you don't get under any car or SUV without jack stands... :poke:

And the stands ARE 3 ton.
Perfect for the home mechanic or DIYer. Lift range from 11-1/4 to 16-3/4 In. Jack stands provide added security with extra lock mechanism. 6000 Lb. capacity.

1.5 Ton craftsman jack I have had to be replaced 2 times, my friends also the same. hydraulic fluid leaked out it now again, and I need to refill it. I dont believe it supposed to do that.

I have 3 craftsman jacks ranging from 15 to 1 year old all work great and don't leak a bit. Take a look at your owners manual you need to blead the air out of the jack when you first get it and every so often as well, if not it can leak out the o rings.

Also what are you lifting with a 1.5 ton jack a passat ? You are getting pretty close to capacity at times.

Yes, but Im only lifting one corner at a time. How much weight is that? It certainly isn't 3000 pounds. Besides it will be going up on a jack stand as soon as it is up in the air.

My 1.5 ton jack worked fine for a longtime and I replaced it with another 1.5 ton jack. The other died from a fun time without putting the breaks on:lol:

interesting, i guess i should RTFM next time.

Lol....yup was helping a another member out and they forgot to place the E-brake on...it broke the Jack! Its OK the new one is sweet and I love it...6 pumps to full height:D
I ruined a jack stand the same way once ! It's a scary thing to see a car drop like that !

I need to pick up a better jack to carry in the trunk to change a flat. I'm surprised VW hasn't had some major lawsuits out of the OE jack. I was changing a tire yesterday with it and it collapsed. Pretty scary.
