Make sure you order an extra accessory drive belt to keep in your spare tire well. If you have a failure and have to source the oddball belt away from home, it might be a pain to find because it won't show up as a direct replacement for a Passat or any 2.0T.

There is a good DIY timing belt R&R procedure at golfmkv.com.....I think you can look at it without joining. The only pain appears to be having to jack up the front right corner and engine independently, in order to work around the passenger side engine mount.

Man, if you can do these in five hours, you should be offering up services on CL! Price the jobs at $750 apiece including parts, you'd be saving folks money and making yourself some $$ on the side. I imagine there are plenty of GTI's and Passats in Austin to keep a guy busy.

The worst part about that whole job is the damn engine cover. I like to set the engine at TDC, with the marks lined up. I do that AND paint the gears and belt. 3 on the cam, 1 on the crank. Then transfer the marks to the new belt, and install.

Some folks say its wrong, but It works for me!

Good luck.

Why would that be wrong? Because of the incremental stretch between each tooth on the belt?
