confirmation of torque converter being bad?

Hey everyone, I'm new around here and new to the VW game. Not new to turning wrenches on cars, but I can already tell this one will try my patience quite a bit. Anyways, I picked up a broken 2004 passat 1.8t fwd from a friend of mine. I've tinkered around with it and I'm pretty sure that the torque converter is bad but I want to confirm before I start tearing it apart.

The trans started leaking fluid and will leave a steady stream behind you as you go down the road once the trans is warmed up. It started slipping when you were on the throttle going around a turn..and has progressed to barely moving under its own power in Drive, regardless of throttle input. From reading around here a bit I found a thread talking about a converter leaking and going bad. I changed the filter, and fluid in the trans and it made no difference.

Also, if it is infact the converter that's bad, does anyone have a good source for a replacement? I'm having a hard time locating one. Thanks for your replys in advance.

In theory, it is only the seal on the torque converter that is bad. If the car was driven long enough on low fluid, the bushing from the front pump will spin and stick to the torque converter. At that point, the trans should be rebuilt.

Any trans shop should be able to supply a rebuilt torque converter if you really need one. There would be this code:
17125 - Torque Converter Clutch: Stuck OFF / No Power being transferred P0741 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

Hopefully all you need is the $20 seal and some fluid.

I wish that were the case but I highly doubt it. When I got the car, by buddy said that the car was leaking once it got warm..but didn't know where from. Upon driving it, and it slipping worse and worse just through my neighborhood to the point of it not even making it up the driveway under its own power, I fear it to be at LEAST the converter. Thank you for the codes, ill check and see what codes are present tonight when I get home.

I had one like that, the owner kept driving until the car would not move. The bearing from the front pump ended up siezed to the TC and the front pump had to be replaced. The valve body has to come out for that, so at that point, a working used trans or a manual swap are good options.

I gotcha. That's probably what has happened. I got the car with problems, not entirely sure how long the issue was going on. I've driven the car around the block to see what was going on..and basically it will crawl under its own power. When I first took it out, it drove pretty well until you got on it hard..and then it would feel like it was slipping very bad but then would "catch " and shoot like a rocket. Going around turns it would rev up but wouldn't apply any power to the wheels until the car was moving straight again. Once I slowed down to get into my driveway, it would rev up and barely crawl on a level driveway so I just put it in neutral and pushed it into the garage. I did all of this after changns filter and fluid. I had the car originally towed to my house..and drove it into the garage like everything was normal to change the fluid.

As of right now the only code that's present is "incorrect gear ratio"

Guess I need to start looking around for a used trans. What do they go for these days with a converter? Its been a long time since I've dealt with junk yards and such.

I'm not sure how much a used tranny with a torque converter is but a rebuilt tranny from the dealer is about $3,600 with a $1,200 core charge, it will come filled with fluid. Not sure how much a used tranny and torque converter will cost though.

I have a hard time justifying that kind of money just for a transmission. I plan to spend that kind of money on the car, but that's for everything I want. Ill find a used one somewhere around here. It isn't a daily driver, and never will be so I don't have a problem waiting for a decent deal on one. Once I get the trans sorted out, ill do a tb job on it, lower it, rims, full exhaust, aluminum skid plate, maybe a chip, and then car audio stuff. This is nothing more than a toy for me.

Am I correct that any tiptrans will work from a 00-05?
