COde 17125 Torque Converter Clutch issue

I have read as many threads as I can find on this problem, but haven't found the information I want.
My problem is that the CEL came on on my 2004 Passat Wagon GLS TDI and I took it Autozone for a diagnostic check (got code 0741) so I took it to a garage to have the transmission fluid checked. They ran further diagnostics (got code 17125) and said the fluid level was okay, but the fluid was dark. They didn't recommend any further action and said it was okay to drive - didn't sound right to me, but what do I know? The car has about 225K miles on it (I don't know its maintenance history, but I got it from a friend and he is usually diligent with servicing, etc.).
My questions are:
1. If I keep driving it as it is, what is likely to happen, if anything?
2. What should it cost to fix the problem (I can't do it myself). If it helps, I'm in Northern VA.
Thanks for any help/advice you can offer!

17125 P0741 Torque Converter Clutch Circ Performance or Stuck Off

The locking clutch for the TC is failing. You can continue to drive the car, but depending on your driving style, it might cause the trans to overheat. As the TC slips, the trans gets hotter. Locking the TC (mainly on the highway) also leads to much better mpg.

To repair this, you need to have the TC replaced/rebuilt. This requires removing the transmission. You would need to check with some local shops to see what they would charge. Also check for any private mechanics (like me) who work on cars on the side, usually for much less than it would cost at a shop. I've had people drive 300 miles, stay overnight at a motel and still come out ahead if they need enough work done.

Someone like this might be worth the drive:

Hi Chris190. Did you get you issue resolved? I have a 2005 TDI wagon I just picked up knowing that it needed at TC. The more reading I do the less I think this is the issue. In mine, the transmission shifts through first and second without issue but after a good shift to third something releases and allows the rpm to climb. Then it re-engages with a bang as the input speed is higher than the output speed for the ratio. Is does this in third and forth and then eventually will go to full limp mode. I just bought the carbon Vnacouver and drove it in second directly to the shipping yard. It is now on route to Toronto and I will pick it up in a couple of weeks. I am thinking wiring, TCU, or solenoid. Most of the TC failures I read about tall about TTC lockup failing but not complete temporary disengagement. Maybe even just low fluid level?? Any help from anyone would be appreciated. Has anyone had this happen to their zf 5hp19?
