Just alittle FYI. I was recently feeling my 99'1.8T was running alittle rough and seemed down on power. No fault codes or CEL were being triggered. I decided to finally use my VAG-COM and monitor block 015 and 016 on my commute in to work. I noticed during acceleration that I was getting muliple cylinder misfires on cylinder 1. I quickly assumed it was a bad coil pack since I recently had to replace my ICM.

What I initially thought was the coilpack turned out to be a bad plug connector (the rubber boot that goes between the plug and coil pack). I was too lazy to check the resistance value from the good connector to the bad one but i can assure you it made a world of a difference. I found it odd though that it never triggered a fault code or a CEL. Needless to say I replaced all four and the car runs much smoother. Just wanted to give you guys alittle heads up.

Question on your random misfires

Hi;
Did you Passat also have random misfires at idle and when accelarating especially below 2K rpm. I'm currently am having this issue and have been unable to isolate the problem. I'll look at the Plug connectors as the ICM, plugs and ignition coil have been replaced.
Thanks,
Marc

i had this problem over the weekend. i was watching the 16 and 15 blocks and saw that at idle the car would misfire everyonce in awhile on cyl1. then when i get home yestarday the car started running really rough. so i scanned the car and it was misfires on cyl 2 and found out the icm is out. so now i have to get a new icm and start replacing the coil packs
