BANGLE ON HIS WAY OUT
It looks as though the controversial relationship between BMW and its chief designer,Chris Bangle, could be coming to the end of the road,Auto Express can exclusively reveal.

While the flamboyant stylists radical remake of the German company's range has divided opinion across the car world,BMW has remained fiercely loyal to him.Now however there are rumours that the American, whom we interviewed exclusively back in issue 773,will step down from the hot seat in less than a years time.
According to our source at BMW HQ in Munich, word has it that Bangle will stay for the Global launch of the 1 Series this autumn, before declaring that his daring brand rethink is complete and that the time has come for a new design boss to take over

Yeah the cars that come out of BMW when bangle were around def were hideous. However, I think it's unfair to blame him. I mean, bangle may design a lot of the crap that comes out of BMW, but most likely he's not the one that has the final say on whether or not his designs should be approved for production. Lol, he may not even be responsible for the flamboyaunt, guady pontiac themes that he's associated with. Just because someone is assigned the main designer, doesn't nec mean he was responsible for every aspect of the designs. Perhaps the theme, or certain details were directed by someone else. It's difficult to know for sure how much artistic freedom Bangle had in such a large company.

IMO, not all bangle cars were visually offensive. I think the X5 was a fairly subtle and pleansant car to look at. I'm guessing maybe the monstrosities that have come out of BMW might have some correlation between BMW's new CEO after Pitchreider left for VW. I'm also guessing that BMW's disturbing car design approach may not necessarily change after Bangle leaves. Things might not get any better.

If this is true, he will have stayed just long enough to mess up the complete line-up :p
exactly. the damage is done, it'll take a while for bmw to replace the entire line that's been cosmetically destroyed.

Panke may have already acted. Late word on the street is that Bangle will be leaving BMW shortly, with the fiasco of the new 7 Series due for a corrective restyle in the next three years.

In any event, chairman Panke need only recall BMW's glorious past and present lineup for the single-minded focus he needs to keep the Ultimate Driving Machine just that, both on the road and in the eye of the beholder

Best news I've heard in a while. At least the design fiasco occurred when I'm in college and can't afford a BMW anyway. In ten years, these designed should be completely purged from the lineup.

Then again, who knows what could be next. :nervous:

Even if its true, its too late.... We all know, BMW does not change there cars for a LONG time. So for a good 5 years from now we could be stuck with the same looking cars.

I wonder what will happen to resale values of the Bangle designs once BMW purges his mistakes? It could make his ugly, yet still awsome, car a total bargain...

bieng different in life is usually no big deal, but trying to be too different in a multi-billion dollar business is a considerable risk. Personally, I think it's not very wise. Better to be conservative and bring gradual change that ppl are more apt to accept, unless you and have absolutely nothing to lose in the first place. Whatever the case, i still maintain the real idiot behind BMW isn't Bangle. He may be the designer, but he's not the ceo, and i doubt he's the one making the decisions behind the company.

I feel the same here. I dont think Bangel is a bad guy. Afterall he is the one responsible for the E46, which is considered a good looking car. Bangel comes up with the designs and the BMW executives are the ones who say whether it will go into production or not. BMW is responsible for the way their cars look right now.

IMO the last great bmw design was the E34, after that I didnt really care much for their designs. I never really like the E36 that much either. I always loved 80s BMWs and in my opinion they were the best looking cars of the 80s. But I guess the shark nose desing would have never worked in the 90s and 00s.
