I'm thinking about abandoning my 2871r build and jumping ship to a B6 S4. I went to a few dealers today and drive some - wow. I think my favorite was a PES Supercharged 4.2. Sploosh.

Anyway, I had a few concerns as I've never purchased a modified car before. I don't want to be in the hole if the SC breaks for whatever reason (I don't know the repercussions of a SC failure or whatever it takes out with it), and needs replacing, etc. Anyone know of 3rd party warranties that covers aftermarket modifications like this?

Obligatory pictures and list of mods for the one I'm interested in:

PES SC, Podi boost gauge, Porsche calipers, lowered, clear corners, etc.

I think I'll stick with a stock Nagaro or Dolphin Grey S4 otherwise, if I can find one with a 6MT.

TL;DR: SC'd S4, warranty for SC?

An SC 4.2? Holeee bejeezuuus! That's like a supercharged Audi playmate of the year. How are you ever going to explain the grin on your face each morning when you get to work? Or the cat that swallowed the mouse look every night at the dinner table with your wife/GF?

These are problems worth having in my opinion. ;)

- I'll take my coworkers for a ride, they'll understand

I'm comfortable living with any/all consequences

The car is priced perfectly at $24k, but I can probably talk it down with my boyish charm. 68k miles, all bells and whistles, with well over $12k in mods for about $6 more than a stock S4. Though there isn't a cold start rattle or anything, the timing chain guides and adjusters scare the shit out if me - if they fail, I'm looking at $4-5k in engine repairs/replacement. Also any reprocussions of a SC failure, $10k alone to replace.

I'd only feel comfortable buying an S4 with a warranty. This isn't a 1.8 or 2.8 where it's easy enough to work on, do a head gasket, or even swap engines. This is a scary V8 that I wouldn't be able to work on as much. I can get a warranty easy for a stock S4, but I'm searching for a reputable one that covers aftermarket engine modifications. Any ideas anyone?

I'm not getting this one, decided that I don't want that time bomb (G4) on my ride. 340bhp is nothing to mess with anyway, literally double that of my A4.. I don't need to SC anything. Just seemed like a good price considering. But I'm going to keep looking.

Where is this beauty? I'd love to see it in person!
In Shrewsbury, MA. I was visiting friends in Worcester so I thought I'd check it out. They had 3 other S4s too: imola 6MT, dolphin grey auto, white auto.

That's perfect. EXACTLY what I'm looking for. DG, low miles, 6MT, bose, no peeling interior buttons, and a great price. I wish that was local. I'd get a PPI and trade in my car.. And the hunt is on!

Go for it Keith. 30 miles around here can mean 90 minutes or more unless I do it on a weekend.
Hell, if he doesn't want it and I knew I could get 6K for the VR, I'd do it.
I'm really leaning towards a B7 though. I've found some cabrio's for only a couple K more, just not sure if I want a cabrio though and they're tough to find in a 6MT.
Was the auto really that much of a let down? I think the B7's have flappy paddles.

I am not going to use car time capital unless he really wants me to do it. It is ultra convenient to me though, so absolutely not problem CR if you want me to give it a thorough once over.

I have had my radar up for a B7 Avant casually for a while now, and it may get more focused this summer because of this:

You're wrong ;)

You're probably thinking of the B7 RS4. The RS4 has direct injection into the cylinder, which means the aerosolized fuel particles don't move through the intake manifold/over the valves. In the S4, the fuel injection takes place before the intake valves, allowing the aerosolized fuel to act as a solvent, preventing any carbon buildup. All direct injection engines suffer from carbon buildup to some degree unless they utilize a combined port/direct system.

Anyway, this S4 has never seen anything less than 93 octane (JHM tuned), and had PCV serviced. I'd be more concerned with scored cylinders walls causing loss of compression and very high oil consumption, or timing guides failing. Both very expensive headaches. Speaking of, anyone have opinions on third part warranties?

Yeah, there's only a small percentage of S4's that have these problems anyway. But those just so happen to be the only stories online since no one ever starts a thread "hey, so my S4 is running well" so everyone runs around like chicken little. I'll probably skip the warranty and hope for the best with all service records and a quality PPI.

Actually just saw an article on that yesterday Newman. According to NGP, it's the new TSI and TFSI engines that have that issue.
Yup, luckily only FSI motors.

which in the VAG V8 world means around 06 and up v8's when they turned into the fsi motors, the carbon build up can be a huge power drain, but it usually only requires cleaning every 40-60k and its about a days work on the V8 for a DIY person.
