This bar does not fit all Passats from 98-04. Mine is a '99 and the A/C line interferes with the passenger side end-link bracket. In order to install you must make a large (1/2") notch in the bracket to clear. Of course the nice powdercoat finish is ruined. You may have to extend the notch into the first bolt hole, which leaves only one bolt to attach the crossbar:

Even then, it is still a tight fit, and you may have to bend the A/C line.

Mike at Pure Motorsports is aware of this. We exchanged numerous emails. Just thought all of you should know!
Early 98 models have different A/C lines, and will not fit. There does
seem to be some flexibility in the lines, and probably slight variations
in the exact placement of them. Just between the several cars I've
tested, there are slight variations in the exact space, sometimes up to
1/4". I've never had a problem installing the bar on any year I spec,
however I've installed and reinstalled well over a dozen sets now and am
very familiar with the process.

Customers may run into some minor clearance issues on the passenger
side, and if they're patient and careful it should fit ok. If they have
any problems, simple email me, and I could offer some help, or return it
for a refund undamaged.

I may consider modifying the brackets slightly before powdercoating, and
adding a small notch to aid clearance. It'll depend on the timing if I
can get them done quick enough.

OK. I'm a little interested. So how many people are out there lurking this Thread that would jump on this if it hit 105? I'm one. I'm sure there are more than 6 more of us out there.

Audiworld / Audizine will help us hit the 40 mark . . .

CREW: I'm getting worried. I changed my battery to a Die Hard International and it's bolted in place, but I'm afraid that the bar won't clear it. Do you have any tips for this? I think I might be able to move it back another half a centimeter. I'll try it out anyways.

I just looked at my engine bay or a nice 10 minutes (mod dreaming... :eek:h: ) and where I see my AC lines they bend farther away from the firewall so it doesn't look like it will interfere.

Note where the second silver tube from the bottom is

After the black valve it kinks right next to the bar. However on my car (a 2000 V6) the kink is lower and very near to the inner most passenger side bolt (the second one from the bottom that is holding down the stress bar in the picture.

For your sake see how yours looks. And bring on more participation. I'm about to dive in STAT.

Clearance wont be an issue. The lines are hard lines but the area where they pass through the firewall is rubber so the lines will move slightly up and down so you can mount the brackets in place. When I installed my suspension, I had the same thoughts that my torque wrench and ratchets wouldnt clear the lines and bolts. With some careful placement of tools and hands, its an easy install and shouldnt be an issue to slip the bracket from under the lines, and back to the correct bolt placement.

Even with the battery, there shouldnt be an issue to remove the battery. Its a tight fit already with the way that the plastic window deflecter is, but its flexible enough to allow you to remove the battery.

I asked Pure MS a payment question and they got back to me FAST. I like that. Nice first impression. Dave, do you have a headcount on this yet?

I put in my $40+shipping/handling$12.95 TOTAL $52.95 deposit. Hope S/H will be accounted in the final price. I'm a little skeptical it'll fit on my 2001 GLS V6 (AC lines look different than the installation PDF), but hopefully it'll squeeze in. I can take some pics if necessary.
