Anybody who has used one of these noticed how tight the clearance and position of the installed filter relative to the motor mount? I put one on today but removed it and went with the large Mann filter. There was only 3/16-1/4" clearance when installed for the Napa and I just don't think that's enough with the motor mount. Isn't there some movement at that point?

2001 AUG engine code 18T.

i thought the same thing, but then looked at the motor mount and it should only go up and and down and not side to side and should not be able to move toward the filter

its been 400mi and i check on it all the time, looks fine and filter is clean no appearance of anything rubbing it, i figured if all these ppl on pw have been using it it must be fine

Good to hear, I figured as much. If there were any issues, somebody would have reported back by now.

Not knocking the Napa 1333, by all accounts a very fine filter. For comparison purposes, you may wish to check out the Purolator L40316. It is a rebadged Mann filter that can be had at Pep Boys for next to nothing, as they frequently run specials on Purolator filters. Standard price is about 8 bucks (still cheaper than the Napa from what I hear), but some have paid as little as 1 cent after rebate. I can pretty much buy them 2 for 5 bucks or less anytime. Only problem is that they dont stock a lot of them. I've never seen more than 2 or 3 L40316's on the shelf in any PB around here.

I've been very pleased with the L40316 and Syntec 5w40 in my 1.8T, with a sprinkling of LC20 to boot. May switch to M1 0w-40 at some point, but just hate to mess with success.

I was using the 1333 until I started getting quality problems. Bad threads, filter internals crooked, etc. After returning two filters, I gave up.

I prefer the factory VW Big Filter. You can get them for about $5 each at www.autohausaz.com. By 'em by the case, and it's free shipping (over $50). I like this filter a lot. It has a great little "nut" on the end that can be turned with a screwdriver, and a large amount of "ticking" in my engine went away when I started using these filters, presumably because of less pressure drop accross the filter.

For price reasons, I recently changed from the VW 068-115-561B to the Purolator L40316 on my 2001 AUG 1.8T. Getting it started on the threads is a VERY tight fit, but it appears to develop adequate clearance as I tighten it up toward the mounting plate.

"Mahle", that's the filter I'm using now.
Yes, I have read that both Mahle and Mann provide OEM VW filters. Champion Labs reportedly does, as well (all of the filters I have bought at the dealership say "made in USA").

I had not noticed those problems with the 3 (as many as the store had) 1333s, maybe you just got into a bad batch. The '99 had some lifter noise that went away the first time I used the NAPA, too. And where is that "nut" on the VW filters? I bought a case of the 561Bs from the stealer and got a case discount, about $6 apiece, but they don't have that nut on the end...

As for the bypass setting being too low, lookit here 'cos I'ma try to reason with ya:
Pressure is force divided by area, or P=F/A. Let's say that your old filter had 200 square inches of media surface. Now, let's say that the Wix has 400 square inches of media surface. The pressure is going to drop by HALF. The Mann/Mahle filters will definitely have twice the surface are of the original unit the oil pump was designed for service with, and Wix will have even more. The point: bypass is not going to open anywhere near as frequently as the OEM filter because your oil pump will not be able to supply that amount of pressure head to a filter with that amount of surface area.

Heh-heh. It's funny how subjective all this is. We all "like" this filter or that filter w/o a freakin' clue how truly effective it is...

Well, one thing we all agree on, right? Just say "NO" to Fram...
