I bought my B5 about 6 months ago as a temporary automotive solution. It has run it's course. The turbo needing replacement has pushed me to the edge. couldnt take the constant smoke, and lack of power. The car wasnt really worth putting the money the replacement would require.. I did small things it needed but the time has come to say goodbye..

I recently bought a low mileage BMW 740i, and am selling my Passat to my neighbor.. I honestly cant say that i will ever buy another audi/VW.. My experience was not the best... Everything you guys had go wrong has gone wrong with my car too... I just would have expected more from a german car.. My BMW's have never been so issue plauged..

I want to thank you all for your help and support, I just want out.. My nieghbor is buying the car and plans on replacing the turbo at some point.. I am selling it to him for $1500 so he doesnt mind the issue.. I used it for 6 months and paid $500 in repairs.. I initially spent $1800 on the car so overall not too bad... Thanks again..

People just don't get it. Most used cars have deferred maintenance/repairs. The new owner gets it all.

X2, the problem with Passats are that they're Audis at VW prices. I wager that most Audi buyers are either a) more willing to spend the money on maintenance or b) can actually afford the money to maintain them. When you put a car like this at a lower (VW) price point, I don't think a lot of owners know what is expected in terms of preventative maintenance.

I do work on my own cars, and I am on my 4th BMW now so i know what i am getting into.. Any used car will have issues that is for sure. Granted I had 3 series cars before and the 7 series are more costly, but my father has a 99 m-sport 540i and has not had any major issues out of his car. he has put 180k miles on his car and has spent under $6,000 in repairs (all done at the dealer) over 10 years of ownership.. His car doesnt leak, smoke ect...

My passat has 155k miles, and the outside of the engine is more lubricated then the inside..

Don't get offended, you guys know the cars require a special person to keep them alive.. And I am not dedicated enough for what the car can even give back....

I have replaced 18- Rx-7 rotary engines, 1- 4.6l Mustang engine, (all my own cars).. This passat just never fit me right... SO I am not scared to work on something.. Actually i have found the passat EASY to work on..

Then what are you doing here whining like a little boy?

The OP bought a 12 year old car for $1,800 and it turned out to have a problem burning oil. Big deal. I don't find that unusual at all, having owned cheap used Nissans, Toyotas and Fords as well as several other brands. Some used car buys are good, others are bad.

i think as soon as you remove the vw dealer network from the vw equation things get much nicer. ive loved my car for the year and a half ive had it. i mean, it hasnt been cheap. but it could have been if i had just let things go, like on my honda. looking forward to a new suspension rebuild next...

I can understand if you just don't like the car. But, getting rid of it when it only needs a $200 2nd hand turbo. I doubt it will take more than 4 hours to change out. You pulled all these engines, but shy away from a simple turbo swap. We don't get it.

#15 ·
I looked for a 2nd hand turbo, but all the ones I looked at seemed to be in worse shape then mine..lol

Overall I just dont want to put time/effort into it. The value of the car is around $2000 and I do not anticipate getting that even after the turbo is repaired..

I just wanted to thank everyone for thier help, update my threads ect. I will continue to check in as with the work I have done I think I can be of assistance to others.. The Passat filled the gap between a catastrophic engine failure in my volvo, and the purchase of my new car..

You guys are acting like a bunch of little kids, grow up.

There is nothing wrong with someone deciding to move on from a Passat. The guy worked on it and sold it for something nicer. He made no negative comments despite the crap you are giving him.

If you want to act like that, go back to VWVortex.

Good luck with your 740! They are beautiful cars....

but you will also learn that the 740 is a maintenance pit after 80K. That is why you can pick them up relatively inexpensive. You will need to work on it yourself unless you have some very deep pockets!

Good luck with the Bimmer, I can't say I disagree with you, I have never had more trouble from a car than this Passat. Little stuff that should never break does, and it costs a bunch to replace, and the big stuff...well you know. But at least it gets bad gas mileage and terrible resale value.

And I don't buy the 'deferred maintenance" argument, the previous owner was better about maintenance with the Passat than I ever have been with any of my previous cars, but it just seems that this car falls apart at 75k

My Passat is coming up on 11 years old. She has 141k miles with stock clutch, engine, tranny, etc. I have spent less than $2500 on maintenance. Funny you say they fall apart after 75k miles p1u1n1x1....I bet mine looks better than yours does.

To the OP, I respect your decision. Not every Passat has had the same history and care. If mine wasn't so damn good, I'd move on too. Enjoy the BMW:thumbup:

I don't get why everyone is getting so defensive, open your eyes and quit being so emotional. The forum has thousands of pages of blown turbo, bad timing belt, failed electronics, bad suspension, misifre...etc. I like the way my car looks, and its really comfortable and has lots of room. I like how safe it is, and it feels nice and solid. On the other hand, its really heavy, handles pretty sluggish, and is of disappointing quality. I have spent hours and $$ working on this in the few months I had it, I love the car when its running, but I also had to buy a Corolla so I had a car I could depend on. Just being realistic.

And how many of those pages are by people who bought used Passats in not-so-perfectly-maintained shape (including myself)?

Really? That's stretching it quite a bit. First of all, it's a family car; it's not going to handle like a sports car. And what's so disappointing about the quality? And as for Toyotas, I'm sure you've heard the news recently, right?

#33 ·
I've only put 4000 miles on this car, and I'm really easy on cars, so we'll see what the future holds, but judging by the previous owner's records, she took it to the dealership for everything and let them do whatever they wanted, yet shit is still falling apart. Maybe I expect too much because my previous 4 cars were so dependable compared to this one, but I don't think so.

#35 ·
Yeah, Toyota has some serious quality problems right now, and if I had a newer Toyota I would be upset about that, but I don't, so it doesn't have anything to do with this. I would agree that a lot has to do with previous maintenance to a degree, but I don't understand the mentality of people on this forums who are blind to the reality that these cars are less dependable than they should be. They aren't the worst cars in the world, but considering the horrible things I have done to Nissans, Toyotas, Fords, and even other VWs in the past I can't believe how badly this Passat has treated me considering it has been pampered, and if you think I'm crazy scroll down the list of threads about Passats with under 125k failing for one reason or another. Again, I'm not saying I hate my car, but I am surprised and disappointing with the lack of quality and dependability compared to my experiences with other cars.

#38 ·
You should go to other car forums and see how many problems are discussed there. Every car has problems. And nobody on this forum is blind. I bought my Passat in severely abused shape, and since then I put over 8,000 miles on it. Stuff is breaking, yes, but it's always something I knew would break. Other than that, she runs great. Hasn't let me down at all.

So either you're doing something wrong, or you're blowing your problems out of proportion.

To the OP: I respect your decision, enjoy your BMW!

I'm not being emotional, I'm being real. All cars are not equal. Some of us have great cars, other have not-so-good cars. Most of us bought preowned, but some of us used our minds and bought ones that had maintenance records and were properly cared for while others didn't. I gather you're smart enough to figure out where the correlation is. Blaming VW for attention to detail and preventative maintenance is unfair and VERY immature. It's not their problem that EVERY passat was manufactured the same in a given year, model, etc and somehow magic happened and they became different...OMG! They aren't in charge of it once it leaves their lot.
