Hi guys,

went out for a drive today and rolled the window down, when i got home parked up and tried to roll it back up it didn't want to go up but made a grinding or cracking sort of noise. I can push it up and down with not much effort at all and it just wont go up or down anymore. I have uploaded a video of it on YouTube which i hope will be some help. I also done a quick scan on a vgate vs450 and got the following error:

00933-062

Electric window motor: Passenger Side (V148)

Any ideas what it might me. Because i can hear it moving i don't know if it will be the motor i hope some of you can help me out. Below is the video of the noise.

Exactly what it is. Just get the whole inner metal door panel. It's usually just under a hundred bucks and everything is already attached for ya. May as well get ready to do your passenger side. My passenger side went last month and my driver side went yesterday. Luckily I had a new one on standby!

I don't remember the dowel and clip problems causing grinding.

To the OP, if you want to replace just the cable assembly:
http://www.passatworld.com/forums/6...s/61-b5-information-base/330814-2002-vw-passat-window-regulator-repair-how.html

Or, as previously mentioned, you can just buy the whole panel for a little more.

Hi,
thanks to you both, i thought it was the cable frayed which resulted in grinding noise but because the scan said motor was kaput i thought maybe i was mistaken, at least now i have come to the root of the problem. I think the video posted looks the best as i can follow it instead of static pictures but thanks for both of your replies!

I am from the UK and have seen these two kits on ebay:

VW PASSAT WINDOW REGULATOR REPAIR KIT / front left | eBay

Volkswagen PASSAT B5 B5.5 WINDOW REGULATOR KIT FRONT LEFT FORNT PASSENGER | eBay

Will these be fine, and which do you recommend? the second kit looks like it comes with 2 spare clips and a spare gear aswell although in the description it shows just one gear and 2 clips as you would need. only thing confusing me is the rubber parts in the second kit which seem pre assembled in the first kit. I know metal (pink audi clips) are better but im happy with the plastic ones for now so thats not a problem.
Which kit should i buy?

Regards

Okay perfect! Aslong as both fit im happy i think ill go with the first one which is 50p cheaper and has no rubber bits which will get me frustrated if i dont know where they go haha! Cheers mate

Also a bit off topic but i have a vw golf mk4 2000, and the passenger window was going up slowly got stuck 3/4 of the way and rolled down all the time. I heard the sills needed to be greased so i used some Vaseline and it was much better, however now its working but goes up very slowly and looks like it struggles on the last 3/4 again but it doesn't get stuck. Would this most likely be the motor struggling and on its way out? The scan returned this code:

00933-190 - ELECTRIC WINDOW MOTOR - PASSENGER SIDE (V148) - SPORADIC - NO COMMUNICATION

or could it still be regulator?

It's hard to say without opening it up. All VWs (and a lot of other cars) get these kinds of issues over the years. If everything was made of metal, it'd rust from the window water and if it was all made of plastic, it'd break easily. They do the best they can with those two materials but it can only last so long. I'd say replace your passat regulator and after you're knowledgable with how that works, the golf is pretty much the same so open that up. I had no idea what my first issue was so i opened up my door. I just kept digging deeper till I found my issue.

Good luck!

On the Golf window tracks, I would use a silicone lubricant or do a search for a lubricant made for the job. Vaseline attracts dust and becomes thick and abrasive.

The fault code: 00933-190 - ELECTRIC WINDOW MOTOR - PASSENGER SIDE (V148) - SPORADIC - NO COMMUNICATION
is most likely a totally separate problem, but might not cause a problem, and the fault might not be in the door, but while in
there check for any bad connections or other faults in the wiring.

cheers tomvw done that today and it works again hopefully it lasts!

Just tried to install the regulator and it seems like the f***ing kit is faulty the cable is too short, any ideas if im doing it wrong or something? Otherwise will have to order a new kit. Also if i order a new kit it will take a few days, i dont really want to put the door card back on etc. At the moment door panel and metal thing is off, in order to get central locking working im assuming ill have to plug the harness that was behind the metal door panel back in? Also will the door opening from outside work. Think it should but not too sure so dont want to try it at the moment since all panels are off, but i didnt disconnect the door lock module so should work from outside right? Below are some pics on the regulator kit, please give me some feedback?

The first picture shows how short it is and the second picture shows how long the cable is if i undo one wind of wire from the motor. Is the second picture alright if i unwind it once from the motor or is that too long/wont work?

Regards

A pic showing all of the cable would be better, but I think the kit is correct.
It looks like you just need to pull the LHS slider down, the other one will come down with it and take up the slack in the RHS cable,
but I don't think you can get the cable on that way.
Take the pulley back off the motor, run the cable around all the pulleys, then refit the motor pulley. (When you refit the motor pulley, the window clamps need to line up with the holes in the panel.)

The kit is installed as per all the youtube and forum pictures but always seems to come up a inch or so short. I just tried the method by running through all the pulleys and then refit the motor but the cable wont fit tight around the motor its a inch short it seems so the motor wont go into position inside the holder with a tight cable. Only way around this is to remove some cable from the motor and then install it which leaves the lose cable in the second pic, and pulling LHS slider down isnt making it fit. So frustrated!
Hopefully u can give me some more tips and i can get it sorted!
Regards mate

Those little blue bits at the ends of the outer cables, have a hole in one end that the outer cable must be fitted into, and the other end has a spigot that must be fitted into the hole in the brackets.
If they are not in properly that could make the cable seem about an inch too short.

thanks buddy, i double checked and sure enough one was not in properly. Cable did get a little longer but definitely wasnt manufactured properly as it was short. Ordered another one and hopefully its good as the seller has no bad feedback. This one i have when i checked his reviews many said item does not fit so his manufacturer is producing them in the incorrect length i assume. Anyhow, because i have ordered a new one i did not want to fit everything back on. I left the metal panel behind the door panel off and just installed the door panel to cover the mess. Is this ok or will water leak into it and mess up all the wires and thus i should put the metal panel on aswell?
Regards and thanks for all the suggestions and help!

Hi cheers for that. Just read it now and its pouring down. Will it damage all the electrics or will it be OK if I put the panel on tomorrow. I'm praying it doesn't get in! Also behind the metal panel is a connector and if water comes in over there that connector would get damaged usually wouldn't it? Praying all is fine!!! Pls reply asap

oops! Was a little wet when i opened it up today wire had some white stuff on the electrical bits which i wiped off. All worked well though so seems good nothing wrong so far. The light at the bottom of the door panel doesnt seem to be working though so maybe a little fault there not too sure but everything else is perfect. Just hoping no water gets in from around the door panel seal. As for the regulator the first one i ordered was definitely short. The second one was spot on absolutely perfect bar the clips. The metal things holding the windows only slide in 1/2 or 3/4 of the way into the clips on the right and left but window seems to work perfectly so i just let it be. Hammered it in hard as i could and it wouldnt budge in any further so all seems well. As a note to anyone reading this.In the passenger door (maybe in all doors) in the bottom left (for the passenger door) the thing the cable goes round is not a pulley but is fixed into place. There is a pin inside it which u can get out by pushing it with a screwdriver from the bottom and then it is just held into place by clip sort of thing so you push the corners in and push it out. This makes getting the last corner in very very easy. Apart from that all has gone well and cheers for all the help guys!
