Hey guys about to do my first tune up on my '03 Passat 1.8T FWD. List of parts? I want to put the good stuff in, and I'm not sure exactly what I should be buying and what I should avoid. I'm used to working on classic Fords, and I've been told VW's can be a bit particular. Anyhow, tips and tricks would help. I know there are a few FAQs on this subject, but nothing ever measures up to personal recommendations.

If the timing belt and associated components hasn't been done, you're getting close to the mileage where it could fail, causing major expensive damage (it's an interference engine). Not exactly a "tune up" item, but probably the most important preventive maintenance item to plan for.

PCV system maintenance and making sure the oil cap is the "updated" design with pressure relief is another important consideration to avoid blown gaskets. At a minimu I would order an updated oil filler cap if you don't have one (it should have orange graphics on top).

Then plugs and fluids/filters would be things to look at. Brake fluid should be flushed every 2-3 years or so. I usually let my ATF fluid go for around 100k miles, but others change after 60k (or less). If you have a stick this could be different. It wouldn't hurt to flush the power steering fluid, but I think that could wait until 100-150k.

Just my opinion...

I think that the most rewarding thing you can do to your car for under $100 is to replace the motor and trans mounts. Pretty simple job, and it completely transforms the way the car drives. It is like driving a new car again.

Other than the the usual basics need to be changed at 80k

Engine air filter

Cabin filter

Spark Plugs (stick with OEM, don't get anything "fancy")

Oil and filter

Refresh all the fluids in the car.

Shock and Spring replacement. (good time to go with something aftermarket)

Check all of the CV boots and vacuum hoses for tears.

If everything else on the car checks out, look into getting an ECU flash. It completely changes the feel of the car and makes the Passat a lot faster and more fun to drive than stock.
