Thinking of getting a beater

The wife and I were talking.....
Some of you know we're thinking of dumping the B6 for a small SUV in April. But she also said that if I could find something of a beater for dog hauling, home depot running, winter weather capable....we'd consider a third car and she could shop for something she really wants in April without being limited on versatility.
I've always like the looks of the older Cherokee's like this one:

But I don't know much about the dependability. She wants to limit the maintenance to about $1K per year. We haven't decided on a max amount for the purchase, but I'm thinking somewhere of less than $4K.
(and she outright refuses to consider any type of wagon....i.e. AllRoad etc.)

What say you?

It looks like it would do what you want/need. I had a 94 Cherokee Sport years ago and never had any problems. The inline 6 was probably their most dependable/capable motor. I don't know what it should sell for, but it seems reasonable, of course you could try to negotiate a little. I used to hear very common stories of people getting a couple hundred thousand miles out of those motors, so I would think it should be good to go as long as it's been serviced even remotely well. Those engines were good at taking abuse.

Those jeeps are pretty reliable, as long as they haven't been abuse (meaning rough offroad stuff). I had a really old one that was really a beater ($300, an insane amount of miles, had been sitting for a year, cheap lift kit, etc). I hated it nearly every moment I drove it, although ther are times I miss it.

My sister has one in much better shape, and the experience is much nicer than the one I had.

I have a friend that recently bought one in PERFECT shape for $500. Honestly, they are pretty bulletproof, since they are simple and used the same design since the mid 80s.

On a different note, it seems kind of silly to own 2 cars that don't fit your needs (I'm guilty of this because we've had 3 cars for the last few years).

I had a 93 Cherokee Laredo and it took a beating and kept on ticking. My wife also had a Ford Escape that we had absolutely no issues with either. I think there are plenty of options for the price that would fit the bill.

Lol! Before I even got to the part where you mentioned a cherokee, that's exactly what I had in mind. I had a 98 (still had a distributor) and LOVED it. I beat the shit out of it and nothig broke. 200K is nothing and rebuilds are a cinch. Even with auto trans, they are reliable and trans drains/refills are super easy. DO EET!

I've got a 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo as a work/beater/winter car. It's got 149,000 miles but starts and runs dependably. I wish it got better mileage. Overall, It serves it's purpose. The 4.0 six cylinder is supposed to be pretty dependable. The back seats fold down, creating a decent amount of cargo area.

It's got great cup holders!

I have an 88 Comanche (Cherokee Pickup) right now, but think I'm selling it and my other extra car for something newer. Friend of mine is not only a Chrysler trained Jeep tech at a Jeep dealer, but also builds Jeep crawlers for the Rubicon.

He swears that the 2000/2001 (Last years for them) are virtually bulletproof. All the bugs were worked out, any issues were solved etc.

So I'm probably going to get one if the opportunity for a low milers appears.

That one looks mint. Sounds good with MB quarts all around too ;). First time I ever did any suspension work on anything, I did shocks on that bad boy. took 3 hrs with hand tools. I would love to get into another one.

Easy! I think I spent $150 on good sensatracs too!

Make sure you get on a nice straight stretch and engage the 4wd. I say straight because it will bind when taking turns due to it being a 50/50 4wd. You will get a little growl out of it but it shouldn't be loud. Engage it off throttle and disengage off throttle, below 40 mph.

Other than the funky steering wheel, it looks good!

Not sure what that means. You mean the engine averages 275K? Cuz as a many time Jeep owner from a Jeep family (currently three, but total about 15) I can tell you that the parts and pieces sure as f&#k don't average 275K! :) More like 60K. It's a Chrysler remember. I also don't know/want to know about the rear end packing.

I love it though. Great color, super clean!
