I was driving home from work as usual and the car seemed completely normal. But then I stopped at an intersection and the gear indicator turned solid red and the transmission seems to be stuck in 3rd. I pulled over and looked everything over no leaking dsg fluid or anything abnormal I turned it back on and the same thing happened, stuck in limp mode. I got it home and immediately tried pulling the battery terminals off and starting it and it is still in limp mode. There was never a check engine light or any other light on the whole time so I don’t understand why this is happening. Reverse works normal and doesn’t clunk into drive. 2002 Passat 1.8t fwd 5 speed dsg. It’s a base model gls so no sunroof to leak on the tcm.

Thanks! I hope someone can help me out

Not trying to be that guy, but a DSG is a dual clutch, while all B5s have a normal automatic. Also, the transmission is probably in fourth, which is 1/1 gear ratio. Anyways, there is another thread started by someone with the same issue. Range switch might be the culprit, and it is known to throw a code.

Yes, you would need a scan tool that can access the TCM, such as Ross-Tech's VCDS. The range switch will be identified as sensor "F125". The range switch tells the TCM what position the gear selector shaft is in. I believe that if the signal from F125 is not logical, or missing entirely, then the TCM quits trying to change gears on it's own, allowing only Park, Reverse, Neutral, and Drive (forth gear -1:1). Also, the lockup clutch in the torque converter will not activate.
