Sound coming from tweeters only

I bought a 2001.5 Passat with the OEM radio/casette and a 6-disc changer. The problem I'm having is that I only hear sound coming from the 4 tweeters. I pulled out the radio and see that there's a connector where it says "For Monsoon Amp" - the second connector from the top.

But I checked my trunk and there's no Monsoon amp. Furthermore, the radio doesn't say "Monsoon". So I think that connector goes straight to the speakers. And sure enough if I unplug it that connector, I don't hear any sound even from the 4 tweeters.

Any ideas what's could be going on? Here are some pics:

Ok, I checked. No monsoon amp. Just 4 blown woofers. So my next question is, what woofers can I replace them with?

Would something like this work? Is 4ohms correct for a non-monsoon system? I'm not looking to do any upgrade to a high-end system - just OEM-like replacements without the OEM price.

Here are a bunch more I found Will these work?

Do I need to just drill out the rivets and use either self-tapping screws or nuts+bolts?

Are you saying, in your car. only the four tweeters are working and not one of the 6.5 speakers are making any sounds??
Yes, that's right. I can only hear the radio through the 4 tweeters. There's no sound whatsoever out of any of the (4) 6.5" speakers. I pulled the door panel off the drivers side door and saw that the woofer cone is torn. I can imagine it's probably dead and that the other 3 are in the same condition. :(

Hey Got s54, I bought some supposedly new oem stock speakers from fleabay for cheap. I bought 4, because I knew I had at least 2 bad...1 totally out and 1 in and out...before pulling out the known bad one...I pushed on the speaker a bit and it did have sound. So I suppose the cone or something internal was bad. I went with stock because I suck at fabricating stuff...using aftermarket speakers you'll have to make/create some sort of spacers...I don't need the high dollar sound...stock sounds fine to me...has enough bass and treble...that's a ll I need.

I think I got them for around 60bux shipped for 4...(now I have 2 spare) and I just had to drill the rivets out, screw them in and plug it up...sounds good now....at least the woofers do...I may try and fine some tweets, they sound blown too...the guy before me must of listened to his radio LOUD...I dont need it that loud.

Good Luck...i'd check fleabay if you're not wanting to spend so much..the guy I bought it from shipped fast (got them in 5 or 6 days) and they were supposedly new. (they did look like new)

x2 ^^^

I have no idea what kind of real watts your running, so get someone that is close to stock as possible. Unless you want to pick up an AMP.

Honestly, it is little more money, but pulling the stock head unit and putting in a mid line after market, get a good amp and replace the front two speakers. It will be very clean and not too loud.

1000x better then what you have now anyways. you also always have the option of upgrade too.

you will need to modify the opening to mount the brackets with the supplied retainer clips. The sheet metal is not flush, tin snip either side of the opening, peel back with pliers, and tin snip the lip, lightly hammer it flat. That is what i did. Alternatively you can mount it with screw and nut, make sure you use a lock washer or they WILL vibe out.

Have you put them in yet? I know I havent looked at speakers in years but I dont recall hearing about those before. The stock "supposedly new" ones I bought off of fleabay sound good enough for me...no buzzing and clean as OEM sound. I just didnt want the hassle of having to fabricate a mounting bracket...as Macguyver...I am NOT by any means.

Good luck and let us know how they sound.
