oh every since ive got the car handed to me ( at 98k miles now has 123k) i have always waited atleast 5 mins even at school ill wait ou tthere i dont care if im late. but i am really thinking about a turbo timer.

I always do a cool down (idle for 1-3 minutes). If driving hard, 3+.

If you think that silly, just imagine what happens to the oil within that red-hot turbo, whether synthetic or not, if you just let it sit there.

ALWAYS let it cool down for at least 2 minutes after normal driving conditions. The turbo is designed to spool and when it does, it gets VERY hot. Always remember that heat expands and when it contracts too fast, it causes problems.

ive seen mine plenty of times after some hard driving sessions when i first got the car. ive never let it cool down though. guess i should start huh?

It's usually a prime cause for oil sludging, so yea it's probably a good time to start.

Ever see/read/hear cooking with your engine? Wrap up some burgers in foil and lay under the hood drive, stop, then eat? I swear I saw this on TV one time. What a great idea..
On Seinfeld Kramer barrowed Jerry's car once to get groceries with Numan and they cooked breakfast but forgot it under Jerry's Volvo hood and it damaged the car.

I’ve never seen the turbo or the turbo manifold glow like that. That’s damn hot, and I’ve driven like an ass before.

Do remember, you don't have to drive real hard to get your turbo glowing. Chipped 1.8Ts run a little hot normally. Do let your cars idle for a while. 5 minutes maybe an overkill everytime.

To the person with the '98 Passat, you might have better luck with a Turbo Timer / Security System than us 2001.5+ ers.

here is a nice pic of a glowing manifold. this was on the dyno tuning the haltech. I tried looking for the old glowing turbo video my friend made, but couldn't find it.

and this is from a vW...(i think)

Now go and buy a turbo timer...its the easiest way to insure a long life of your turbo and to impress your friends by leaving your car on when u walk away from your car, hah.

Cool pix...

I've been trying to get a definitive answer on this: I've seen postings that indicate that some of the later model year Passats have a stock turbo timer, or something similar, so that you don't need to leave the engine idling for a few minutes before shutting down. I have a 2003 1.8t (GLS). Do I need to let it idle before shut down or not?

Thanks
