I thought it would be cool if there was a thread for DIY jobs that were organized by difficulty, relative time needed to complete, necessity to the well being of the passat, if it should be repeated and maybe even a list of tools/parts needed.

I know this is a pretty big job but I think it would add to the forum greatly. I wish that I could be the one to take the time to do this but I just enrolled in vdub kindergarten. Haha

Just a thought..

I think we may have done that, it is called the info forum.use search on the bottom of the page also to find "stuff"

always the guy with less that 15 posts that wants to reinvent our website.

Don't get me wrong man I don't want to reinvent your site.

I've seen the index, I'm new to vw. It doesn't give any info on which jobs are important to do,or which jobs are fxking impossible to do for beginners.

Like I said... JUST A THOUGHT. No need to be dicks.

Lol, you only have to ask. PLenty of people will help out with advise ref difficulty.

i know from my experience i did ALOT of reading on this site before i asked any questions. it helps to do your own research. that way you don't end up asking questions that have already been asked a million times.

if you put in the effort to get your self informed the members here will have no problem helping you out:thumbup:

You can't censor a swear word for emphasis? Okay, won't happen again.

And I did look around, I thought accessibility and ease of access was a priority for the club.
you're not promoting a very good community atmosphere scottpassat, and I won't take the way your handling this as the norm because I've found all of the other moderators, staff, and veteran members that have replied to a post as being very helpful and knowledgeable.

I'm not trying to be abrasive but I feel as though this is your attitude:
"Let's just treat the new members and any suggestions they might have like crap."

Datski, knock it off. Just drop it. Trust me it never ends well. Look around some more and just consider this thread your first flame job. Move on.

You'll see that we are a little "different" than any other forum. A little skin thickness and civility goes a long way. Scott is testing you. You did't take it well.

Thanks for the helpful advice wagonman, I've been trying to read up as much as I can with my small amount of spare time and am just looking for a smallish but necessary project for my b5.5 this weekend.

The patience is appreciated man

lol @ flying off the handle. Especially on a site that can save you thousands over the course of Passat ownership, ill-advised to piss off a mod right out of the gate - glad you cooled off. :)

DatsiK, check this out - NEWMAN'SOWN had your earlier this year. Not 100% what you were looking for but hopefully pretty close - it's in the Noob Tube for this very reason. Welcome!

VAGguy- I know arguing with a mod never ends well, but he took what I was trying to say the wrong way. I can do the thick skin part, but in my experience that's not really a good way to introduce yourself.. and idk i thought i was being relatively civil. Thanks for the words and it is dropped, i don't want to argue with anyone

beaumis- I'm in Socal, Anaheim area, thanks for the welcome, i learn more on here everyday

doyles- I actually printed that out and put a copy of it in my glovebox for reference, the DIY guides are helpful but it doesn't really tell you as a new passat owner what needs to be done, you know?

I feel lost in a sea of knowledge:banghead:

Maybe I'm asking too much

You know you already got a huge start of things to look into in your first thread.
Also, the best way to find good info is using the google search at the bottom of the forum page!

all the mods are cool here
i wouldn't like someone pissing on my years of work without appreciating all the work that has already been done either
i was reading in this forum for months before joining
then i was reading for months more before really posting much.
there is an abundance of info on here, maybe too much?
yes, at times it can be hard to navigate through all the info, but it usually IS all there, so put in the effort to find it before calling people d***s for not spoon feeding you

that being said, welcome to PW, and i hope you get as much enjoyment/info out of this site as I do

Well sir, if you look in the comments/ suggestions thread, you will see that nearly all new good ideas are shot down relatively quickly.
btw that is where this thread should have gone...

The biggest issue is that you have 11 years of info from people that are here and some that have moved on years ago. It's quite a daunting task to try to get all of that info back and organized.

fixed your post, Dan.

OP, please keep in mind that this forum has existed for much longer than you've been driving. no one is saying your idea doesn't have merit; however, there's no way we're going to go back over 11 to 12 years of work made by others here to try to accomplish what you are suggesting, unless, of course, you're volunteering to do it for us.

I don't think it makes sense to sort them by dificulty becuase your not going to fix a cv joint becuase of the time it takes your going to fix it becuase yours is broken

However given the state of most of the writeups and the out of dateness of the infoforum index i have started the passat writeup wiki located : http://passatb5.wikidot.com/do-it-yourself

I've been trying to add as many as i can get my hands on (and that the orginal author will allow) so please feel free to take a look and tell me what you think

It IS a daunting task, and I don't want anyone to think that this op was me ASKING for such a list, merely a suggestion to include in your organization process

Jay-Well like I said in my op if I had the knowledge of the car and of the repairs I'd be more than happy to but.. *shrug*

I wish that I could!

Maybe one day eh?

#25 ·
And to crash- difficulty would be helpful because I'm sure there are people on here that don't do everything for their car themselves. It would help people with varying levels of DIY-ness to see which projects they could do themselves or which they'd rather have a shop do, could save someone a buck or two by getting someone to try something they would've regularly had a shop do...

#26 ·
I would think that once you find and read the diy, you would have a good idea of whether or not you are comfortable doing it. All the writeups I've seen show everything so well that they are extremely easy to understand if you had no idea before.

#30 ·
Not finished.

I'd like to apologize to Scottpassat, didn't mean to disrespect.

Jay I see where you're coming from. Didn't mean to start a clusterf***
I'll ask in the garage if I have any questions about my car. Sorry for my noobage.

#34 ·
I agree, one mans hour long job is 3 days for me in my garage.

the biggest help i've been trying to provide is "here is what youll need to buy" and here are the tools youll need to fix it"

that always bit me in the ass when i was doing repairs. "what do you mean i need a 3/8ths clockwise hydrospanner?"

The requests for the left handed phillips screwdriver always get me mad. I mean, were do you find those things? Does Harbor Freight have them?

^Color specific would be so helpful

I've been trying so hard to find ANY silverstone sedans that people have worked on at all
I think I've only been able to find one or two and they had minimal work done or it's always a wagon -__-
