So I have a new stern snub mount ready to put in and I read something that if you have a 1.8T, you don't need to take off the bumper to do the installation?

I'd love to do this as it'd save a lot of time, and am not sure how I should go about doing the installation without taking off the bumper. Can anyone tell me the steps to do this or any tips on the install?

Thanks

you can get the bumper off 5mins, then again i only have a couple screws on each side that hold my wheel liner to the bumper.

you only need to loosen the lock retaining bolts on each side a little, enough to pull the bottom end out but not quite in the service position. Shove a brick or a thick piece of wood in there between the radiator support & the ac compressor for example & yank out the factory snub.

o yeh ull prolly need to take off the aluminum bumper to get the retaining bolts. There are only 2 long bolts that hold the aluminum piece

I know this isn’t what your looking for but its real easy. Im curious how its done w/o removing the bumper, If that’s even possible.

i did the non-bumper removal with the PMS mount. i just remember it being a complete bitch of a fit. i did have to trim the inner lip some so i could easily slip it onto the shaft in an awkward working angle.

yes, i did trim it down, i did NOT remove the little ridge inside of it!!! that's absolutely important to keeping it mounted in it's position.

also, if it has a closed hole on one side, it may help to drill a hole through it. i vaguely recall pz saying that this would help, way back when, as it created kind of a resistive pressure. nothing crazy, just a small 1/4 inch hole at very max.

Ok you are talking the very first Stern snub mount that hasn't been sold in a few years. That one only had 1 hole, was rounded out on the other side and red. It looked like a clown nose. lol
The ones Stern has been selling for some time now are black and a hole all the way thru it.

When you go to put the Stern snub into place make sure to warm it up in the micro wave for 15 seconds at a time till it is nice and warm. Then just place it over the snub post and push it on using a pry bar or some other type of long metal bar. This will just pop it into place.

Stern and Purems are the same, it is Mike's brand name product.

I have known Mike Kim the owner of Purems for a long time, back to when he was doing suspension installs in his home garage. Purems was 10 minutes from my house up till a few weeks ago when he moved the business to Miramar in San Diego.

I did it the same way as 20vvillian. Since I was pulling the oil pan off for replacement, I pulled the engine side mounting plate off of the engine. That allowed for the pan to be pulled without pulling the front into service position.

So after reading that DIY, it looks like I need to loosen the motor mounts before I start working on the snub.

Do I just loosen the bottom bolts of each motor mount or motor mount bracket? Once those are loose, loosen the bolts of the snub mount bracket and then start raising the pan. Once it is high enough take the bolts/snub mount out and replace.

does that sound right? Sorry some info in that DIY is kind of confusing/not too informative.

Doing that way you are pretty much lifting only the front of the engine since the rear of the engine is bolted to the transmission which is then held down by its 2 mounts. Its also putting more stress on the transmission mounts and your shifting the driveline around. In the end all of the mounts will need to be loosened to allow all of the driveline to settle back into place. Don't do all of them and you just end up with more vibration and more work to do again.

I popped in my APR snub after heating in a microwave, no problem.
