Possible problem

I just got my oil changed about 2 weeks ago, seeing as it was after 3k miles of driving I opted to have an outside shop change it rather than the dealer. A jiffy lube of sorts... anyway... I got synthetic oil and all went well. But now I am finding oil dripping on my garage floor. I have constantly checked the dipstick, and all looks well. The oil is between the two orange markers... almost touching the top orange marker. I am concerned that maybe there is something leaking, but my hunches tell me that if there was something leaking wouldnt it leak even more when the car was on? Isn't the oil system pressurized? I guess my question is, do you think this is serious enough to have the guy that changed it look it over again? Or is it just some sort of overflow valve because he overfilled it. Or maybe he made a bit of a mess draining the oil. When I looked at the puddle I thought it was a signifigant amount of oil... not a quart... but definatly a few oz's. I found this puddle on saturday, I then cleaned it off the floor of the garage. Today when I got back there was another puddle. Not as big as the first one, but certianly a noticable puddle. I cleaned that up and put a piece of cardboard down. (this was around 3:30 PT) When I finished up with dinner (around 7:45) I checked the cardboard, and there was another small puddle... I am very concerned as to what is going on. Then again I checked the oil dipstick and it looks like its fine. Anyone, please offer some suggestions! I don't want to do something that will hurt my Passat! :cry:

You shouldn't be leaking oil, whatever the reason. If it is overfilled, it's not supposed to just leak out. Since it is a pressurized system, it is also a closed system. If it leaked more when the car was on, how would you know? I only found out about my recent leak (from my cracked oil pan) as a result of the leaking oil blowing aft of the leak to get burned on the exhast at the point of A pillar.

But I wouldn't say yours is overfilled. I too just got my oil changed, and as they often do, they overfilled it: about 2mm above the base of the top orange marker. Having the same concerns as you about my wonderful little car I searched on here and vortex and IMO the opinions are a little more in favour of no big deal than they are otherwise. As long as your dipstick reads in the operating area, you're probably fine.

But I'd go back to whomever changed your oil, and have them trace it. If it wasn't leaking before they changed it, and started leaking right afterwards, they ought to fix it or pay to fix it. Check out what their satisfaction guarantee says.

Where exactly is the oil leaking from? A friend of mine noticed an oil leak after he had his oil changed in Jiffy Lube. It ended up being an oil filter. After the next oil change the problem went away.

I had my oil change in the same place, so I decided to check if I had the same problem. To my dismay - I noticed some oil on the bottom of my engine. I traced the leak to an oilfilter - right where it connects. My oil level seems fine, and it is not leaking dramatically. I am just going to wait till the next oil chang.

Juffy Lube use a chaneric filter - I think it is just crappy, so is the service. They are the ones that caused my belly tray to fall off. :crazy:

Another possibility (which was the case on my car) was that when they removed the old filter, oil was dripped on everything (subframe) below the filter connection. Slowly this will work its waydown and drip from the belly pan. I had the grease monkeys who did mine remove the belly pan and thoroughly clean the underside of the car and belly pan.

Or it may be that "oil spill" from a sloppy fill job is just running off.

I think you are 100% right. When you pull the filter, oil runs through the holes in the subframe. When I did mine for the first time, it spilled in there so much that oil came out of the frame on the passanger side of the car!! It stopped after a little wile and I have since adjusted my techique.

Update

I took it in the next day, turns out the tech who opened the drain bolt didn't tighten it enough. According to the senior tech at Jiffy Lube the pan is aluminum or something and the less experianced tech didnt want to strip the bolt hole. I had him tighten it, made him hose down the skid cover/plate, and give me a free wash, so all is good now. I am still confused why my oil level indicated normal after the amount of oil that leaked... I would say it was at least a 1/2 of a quart. I would think it would have gone down slightly. Then again he did over fill it a bit so I guess it all works out. Thanks for your help guys.

I just heard this from my dads partner who used to work with BP. Says SYN is a big joke. It does seem to hold up better if using for more than 3000. But that si just form me letting the oil out when hot. SYN stays thicker when hot.
