Good day everyone!

Im looking to buy my very first VW! After some extensive searching for a car i found these 2 that both fit my budget and also look like good deals. One is a passat GLX(manual) and the other a passat GLS 4Motion.

I am a fan of German Engineering however through my own experiences of maintaining my old Porsche (1987 944s) i understand it takes a higher level of commitment of responsibility and attention to maintain these beauties.

Both of them are 1996. the Passat GLX has 139,000 miles. According to the dealership it has done all services including Tune Up, Brakes, Transmission, and Engine service. It's going for 2,995.

the Passat GLS 4Motion 74,000 miles and has all scheduled maintenance on it as well. however its a private seller. it is going for 2,900

What i wanted to know was a few things:

First, anyone have any first hand experiences on either of these 2 cars? pros, cons? things to look out for?

Second, given with the mileage of both cars what are some things i can/could expect to go wrong.

Third, anything else that would be helpful. Thank you very much!

ill check back in a few hours!

I didn't know they offered 4motion with the b4 platform?... Anyways, I've heard that the automatic transmission with the b4 platform were plagued with problems. I've had my GLS for 5 years now and have never had a problem with the engine or transmission. I have however, replaced the outside door handles many times. The job takes 5 minutes and the locks are easily swapped out so you only need the factory key. In my opinion I would opt for the GLX with the 5 speed. The GLS just doesn't have the power to making driving fun in all situations. But if gas mileage is your goal, go for the GLS. I typically see an average of around 30 mpg per tank with the little 4-banger.

I bought my 1996 Passat TDI wagon about 3 years ago and had to fix 3 of 4 door handles, reattached the sideview mirror glass before they fell out, replaced all bushings, struts and bearings in the front suspension, timing belt, water pump, ac compressor, and a few other stuff. I knew about most of it before buying it but my friend sold it to me for the right price and disclosed everything. To this day, I still think it's one of the best cars I've ever owned....mostly because it's TDI, always gets 40mpg in city and goes 900miles per tank.
