My L.E.D CITY LIGHTS AND HID HEADLIGHTS UPGRADE

Hello guys a few weeks ago I replaced my city light bulbs with L.E.D.S I ordered online from autolumination which are the single LED CANBUS type. I would say there perfect as far as in intensity not to bright to my liking, see pics below. The lowbeams were done with the DDM Tunning 35w slim ballast 5000k HID kit. This new install is all supplied by the aftermarket euroswitch I installed not pulling any relays or throwing any codes.

HID LOWBEAMS WITH CITY LIGHTS

CITY LIGHTS ONLY

My next step is to get the high beams to match the color scale of the low beams possibly using a halogen type bulb or other but not an HID setup. I also want to upgrade the foglights to a yellow color scale around 3000k using super bright L.E.D or Halogen type bulbs, based off of my pics what recommendations would you make, brand, type, style? I am open for all types of suggestions.

Well there is really no part # on the website or the invoice I got but they are described as:
Wedge
Item # 1 Led Canbus
Color: Cool White, Lens: 194
4.99 each
here is the pic from the website

Remember as city lights they are not as bright as they look in my pics, this is a foward facing single L.E.D

I wonder if any of the side firing ones would fit.

I would like to replace my city lights with something that matches my HIDs (same kit and color as yours), but I'd prefer to find something that lights the housing, not just forward facing. I have looked but not really found anything I think will look the way I want. I also don't want some blue tinted halogen; it may create a little more heat and I don't want the blue bulb to be visible when the lights are off. You probably should consider pulling that relay so you're not running DRLs with those HIDs. They don't tend to like reduced voltage.

I dont like the blue tinted bulb look either so thats why I went with the cool white led and 5000k HID. Try looking online for the full coverage LEDS I have seen them on multiple websites, problem is there surface area (circumference) maybe to wide to get in the lighthousing assembly. As far as the DRL relay I opened this circuit by removing Pin B and Pin 56D of the Euroswitch and Ive had this setup for about two months now with no errors or problems at all. With the relay still installed this way I dont loose my parking brake warning light indication on the instrument cluster.

fyi, the parking brake warning is still there if you pull the relay. Pulling the relay is the least invasive way to turn off the drls. You just hacked up a perfectly good euro switch.

I have another unused euroswitch, but in my model passat according to the schema the coil of the drl relay energizes the park brake warning light switch, either way no error's but my headlight circuit is custom rewired.

Wow eversale has some pretty good prices, I think that L.E.D you pointed out in the link should work as long as the circumference can fit into the bulb housing I know for sure 9mm and smaller will fit but they listed the diameter on there website in inches.

Eversale ones worked fine however don't plan on taking them out... you can fit them in.. but not get them out. Learned that and had to take the whole headlight BACK out and shake the bulb out. :(

EDIT: take the high beam out and reach in with a finger and push the bulb out from the inside! :)

They aren't on Can. Mine are dead at the moment. Looks like I'm going to AZ for the ones you linked. only $7 more than the ebay ones I took a chance on.

Just caution...they don't seem to "flood" the reflector with light, at least during the day. More like amber cyborg eyeballs. heh. My AZ didn't have anything but the amber and some weird rainbow ones that went blue, purple, red, yellow over and over again. Guess which ones I bought first by accident?

My iPhone camera really shows the light diffusing, but it really doesn't. It's 2 yellow pupils in the night. hahaha.

Not really noticeable with the XtraVisions and H3 fogs..

To see the uni-directional effect of the city lights, you really can't shoot them at night. Try shooting them in the shade during daylight or at dawn or dusk. They do appear as little white pupils.

And looking at these pics reminds me I have stealth bulbs for the corners I need to get in... :lightsaber:

I finally replaced the yellow bulbs I had - I didn't like the look of them with HIDs. I got the single LED eurolites from Canadian Tire - it looks like they literally just started stocking them as I could never find them before. I can only otherwise find a large multi-led wedge bulb - about 8 or 9 leds to a wedge. I don't think they will fit in the map lights but I'll have to see. I'd like to replace all the yellow interior lights with white leds

What size do you need? It would seem that eBay seller has 6418 festoon and 194 wedge base bulbs in all manner of colors and brightness options...

Some models have 194 some have 6418, open the door and look underneath at the bulb it self remove the lens cover if necessary, if its shaped like a cylinder tube with metal tabs on ends its 6418 if it is shaped like a mini micro drop/ waterballoon shape then its 194.

I think VAGguy noted that the city lights are not on the CAN bus, which is convenient, because you don't need a CAN bus type LED to work. CAN bus LEDs have a resistor bridging the circuit and imitating the load of an incandescent filament because the [light emitting] diode is so wicked efficient (100% of energy is converted to light), in a circuit by itself, it would look like an opening to a sensor at the terminal end. So without the resistor, the CAN bus would think the bulb is burned out.

However, when we find a multi-chip LED to fit the city light socket, I am very interested in making the city lights function as my DRLs, so a diode will be required if the DRL circuit is monitored on CAN. Since the DRLs normally run on low beam circuit at reduced power, I suspect a CAN sensor, if any, is going to be located on the low beam circuit. If the city lights are direct wired to DRL output, I suspect they would again escape CAN error scans.

In my opinion I would say that the multi-faced LED posted above would fit the city light housing because it appears to have the same circumference of just the forward facing single LED which is the ones I have as seen posted in my first post. Also just as a note autolumination shows those LEDS with the white plastic socket covers but mine came with none, it was just a printed circuit board with the LED and other micro components, but they fit with no problem.

As far as errors you should be worry free.
