lower engine belly cover...

OK, my 99 1.8t doesn't have a lower engine cover. Does anyone run their cars with this off? Or is that a bad idea to not protect the pulley, belts etc. w/o a cover?

The dealership wants $175.34 for a cover and this includes some hardware. I also was told a W8 cover would fit - this only costs $75. If anyone can confirm the W8 cover fits I'd probably get this.

I also found a couple ebay auctions (Item number: 8061990661), but if the W8 cover works, then that might be the ticket.

It can fit. You buy now!

I didn't have a belly pan a few months ago . . . $6000 later and now I have a new engine!

(I still don't have a belly pan though  )

Thanks bro!

I know this sounds stupid, but I honestly haven't had the time. I'm coming up on finals week and trying to finish all my papers.

I will get a W8 pan ASAP though for m CB5 brethren :salute:

My cover tore to shreds on the highway. When I took it to my favorite mechanic, he told me that it wasn't worth the cash to replace. But be careful going over speed bumps or you could rip your oil pan open.

Check and make sure all the places the pan clips to are still there. The clip points in each of my wheel wells had ripped out, meaning I would probably need new wheel well liners to hold a belly pan.

PRoJeKV6, how did you wreck your engine? Was it from driving without a pan?

I hit some road debris and it cracked my oil pan. Oil leaked out, and even though I pulled over immediately and shut the car off, the engine locked up.

FYI, the cover DOES NOT cover nor protect the Oilpan. Officially its called something like a engine sound dampener panel. What it is good for is to keep too much dust and dirt from dirtying your engine bay IMHO.

Yes, the W8 fits

Yeah I forgot to mention that. Plus it helps make the car more aerodynamic.

Not ever seeing a pan installed, how many clips are there? IIRC, I saw 4 clips furthest in.

So the W8 pan is an engine sound dampener panel and it fits - ok, is the original cover any different?

Ideally:
Three silver screws under tranny
Two black screws (sides) and one nut (center) under lower grille
Two pair of 1/4-turn black plastic screws in wheel wells (4 total)

I think that's all, someone please correct if not.

i just bought the w8 pan for $60 at the dealership. the parts guy wanted to know where i had heard about it being so cheap compared to the stock GLS part.of course i told him about PW, and he said that the service writers would be glad to hear about it because they hated telling people a plastic cover cost 200$.

the fasteners include 4 plastic rivets which connect through the wheel well liners, 3 metal screw-type fasteners which come with the cover, and 4 additional of the metal screw type fasteners, plus one more plastic fastener which looks like some kind of nut.look in the info base forum, i think, for a list of part numbers. the parts guy at the dealer just went by what was on the computer, so i might not need all of them.(i haven't had time to put it on yet)

It appears that the benefit of the pan is to minimize dirt & debris from getting in the engine area. Of course it is also a hastle to remove this everytime the oil has to be changed.

I'll probably get a W8 cover from the dealer... Thanks for all the info.

More searching and I found the belly pan parts list here.

it doesnt protect the engine from getting damaged, its just for sound, so running w/o it is no less safe, its just flimsy plastic, it wont protect anything from banging your oilpan
I challenge you to the following. Using the back of a claw hammer, walk up to the bottom of your oil pan and give it a solid whack. The belly pan would have stopped that damage by dissipating the energy. So while it won't save you if you run over a bunch of cinder blocks, I'm glad it's there for the occasional transaxle, exhaust, or semi tire tread I nearly hit on an occasional basis.

Although that may not be its primary duty, it serves that purpose nonetheless.

When did you complete your MBA studies?

Also, I'd like a belly pan that makes oil changes easier ...without having to shell boku bucks for the metal one with the trap door in it.
Sorry I finnshed up last year. and the funny part is I still got a crap job, with little pay...lol. The job market stinks and everyone I work with doesn't even have a degree.

I really want to move back home to MD but I have a wife and she needs one more year of work exp under her belt before she looks for a good job. I do now work with T-bill trades in the Fed rev. and would love to do finance / consulting for clients portfolios.

Wow, there are a lot of topics on this subject. My personal view is if you live in a more southern climate (ie. little or no snow) and you aren't lowered much the W8 is the way to go. I live in Montreal where the roads are awful and there a plenty of huge ice chunks that fall of semis and litter the roads. That's why I put alumimum skid plates on my GTI and Passat. Oil changes are a snap (there are only 5 bolts on my Passat plate), the oil pan is well protected and I never have to change it again.
