I have a 2002 Passat B5.5 1.8T AWM engine, and my cam chain tensioner needs to be replaced. I talked to two local shops that I had been before and one of them quoted me 7 hours of labor and the other said 5-6 hours of labor. The DIY below doesn't seem to take that long, especially for an experienced mechanic:

I am thinking maybe, those mechanics consider taking exhaust cam off, which should require a long time because of timing belt. Am I missing something here? Approximately how many hours of labor should I expect for this job from a mechanic? Thanks.

Boy I had mine replaced about a year ago and I don't think it was that much time. Somebody should have some more accurate times.

Thanks for all the responses. Yeah, I don't understand why they both quoted so high on labor, they looked pretty honest actually. Bill, I am pretty sure they quoted me for cam chain tensioner, because we talked about oil sludge relation to the cam chain tensioner failures. Anyways, I'll call a couple of more places. Thanks again for the clarification.
