(98 chipped 1.8t 73k) ouch. i went in expecting the worst and i got pretty much that. the belt is still on but has a 6 inch strip of missing teeth. the diagnosis was the tensioner failed, i had the early style and never had it updated. the valves are bent as i figured they would be. now i need to change my head. i found a low milage one used here on cb5 for $450 plus $50 shipped and i got one of the audi techs at work to agree to do the swap for $300 the saturday after next. so for $800 and what ever it cost for gaskets and hardware i guess i'm getting off cheap, relatively speaking. i'll update as progress continues and take pics of the job being done.

yep, the ultimate one that includes the waterpump. dude, get it done!! mine only made noise for a month before it went. there is no benefit from waiting unless your trading your car in soon. congratulations for making the calender by the way!!

Hey, thanks :)

Ya, i've been trying to get some time to get it done, been crazy around work lately :eek:h:

I'm planning on picking up the ultimate package, and I've got my K04 lined up for the 1st week in Jan. from Kinetic Motorsport, so before that goes in, I definately need to get the T-belt fixed.

When did your belt fail? High rpm under load, or just a easy drive down the street ?

GL w/ the repairs

sorry to hear about that. so i'll assume you are not the original owner? Otherwise, as long as you had it checked at around 40k it would have been covered under the 100k powertrain warranty.

Not sure if there is any squeel associated with the tensioner failure. You might be thingking of the serpentine belt tensioner which does sqeel when its cold. When the t-belt tensioner fails, the little ball joint pops out of its socket and keeps spinning around making a loud clicking noise.

that is correct. no squeel, just a very noticable clicking sound from the front of the engine. sounds like your driving an old beetle.
