Hi all,
I just bought a 2002 Passat GLS 1.8T with 24K miles on it. It still has 2 years left on the warranty, but I was wondering when I should go in to the dealer to get it checked out--does Volkswagen suggest doing checkups at 30-60-90K miles?

Hey, if you don't mind my asking, how much was it?

I'm in the process of buying a used 2001.5 Passat...I got mine down to $11,500 w/60k miles on it. All leather, Monsoon, 6cd, sunroof, etc.

Immaculate condition.

Thanks!

The dealer should tell you about at least 2 recalls. The first is for the coil packs. The other is for the liner in the left rear wheel well to prevent a gas tank fire if the tire blows and punctures stuff down there.

As for the coilpack recall, I will say ask them what coils you have and look at how well it runs now. Mine was smooth silk cold or hot and now it's rough when cold and damp for the first 10 - 15 seconds. It never had a CEL with either set of packs, but just the same I like better the way it was from the factory.

In the information forum we have a coilpack writeup that you can read which explains the various packs out there.

Good luck

If you don't do brake work, or know much about it, have someone check them.

I got my 2001.5 in January, and my first service was in June... I was told that I would have to replace my pads and rotors, because the pads had worn down too far. (still haven't done it  )

I asked why they weren't replaced earlier, before I took the car, and the Service Manager said that it was within guidelines when the car left... My point is that there are some things you should make sure to get someone to check on as soon as comfortable. I could have avoided this issue.

The service was also done because of time. I was under miles when I went in... I do a lot of city driving, and the cars are looked at by how they've been driven. You might drive very differently than the previous driver, and have different wear issues.
