...which filter would you fellows recommend? A friend of mine recommended WIX.

I have an 01 4motion wagon, and have been changing my own oil for the last 44k miles. I use pretty much what autozone has in stock, with the latest being a FRAM. I have not had any problems at all during since the dealer serviced me at 20k miles. As long as you change it regularly you should be fine, just don't let it go over 5k miles when you change it, that's kind of pushing it.

I use the Mann OEM filter (about $6 each) which are a long-life filter or the Mobil 1 filter (about $10).

No, we're not kidding, Fram is not what it used to be. Google on "oil filter study" for details. For a V6, go OEM. For 1.8T, either the "new" OEM, or the "Big Kahuna" made by Wix, also sold by NAPA.

A friends Jetta had engine damage that was traced back to the Fram filter. Its was a long time ago and I don't remember the details, but as mentioned, don't use Fram!

I use either stock or Mobil1

And yes, read that oil filter study, its very interesting.

I see.... thanks. I just got a shipment of Amsoil Euro-Car 5W40 Synthetic today and want to put all the best in my baby. This engine (2.8L V6) has got to last me a long time.
I also use the filter from AMSoil. It's got a very unique feature (which I haven't heard of any other filter to have, somebody plz correct me if I'm wrong!). which is like a check valve that once you cut the engine off it won't let the oil run backwards into the engine, bringing with it all the dirt particles that it had previously filtered.

Does Mobil have a similar set of selected comparisons?

But Amsoil is very very good, it does appear to produce some ash when it burns but less than others that produce ash. Mobil 1 doesn't. Castrol Syntec produces a lot more.

From the figures it may well be the best, but it's a lot harder to get hold of.

Fram is junk. We use them at the shop I work at, and I've seem some that have blown apart at the seams already. I was using Bosch on my V6, but I've since switched to a Napa Gold filter, which is made by WIX. From what I've heard, WIX is a very good filter, and they make most of the filters for other companies anyways. I think most of the major manufacturers that make filters for everyone else out there are WIX, Fram, and Baldwin, but there may be more than just them. I like the Napa Gold filters because they're made by WIX, so it should be a sound investment, and they're cheaper for me cause my shop has an account with Napa, so I can get them at cost.

I use K&N oil filters. You can get them at Checker/Autozone, etc for like $10...I wouldn't use anything else.
