In Sept 2013 I bought a 2004 1.8T Passat wagon with 223000 kms, leather, sunroof and paid $3500. Have since replaced both front half shafts, wiper blades, and switched to K&N air filter. Keeping my fingers crossed but I really enjoy it.

In Sept of 2013 I also bought 2005 Tdi Passat wagon with bad auto transmission and rust spots on both front fenders, passenger door and rear hatch. It has leather and sunroof. Paid $1300 for it. This was meant to be a project car (aren't they all?) Of course I'm hoping VW will come good on their rust perforation warranty.
The intention was to convert it over to a manual 5 sd.
After several months of shopping around I ordered a complete (?) kit to change it over to a manual from Dutch Auto in the Netherlands. Parts will finally arrive today. $2200 for that package. $3500 total so far and my friend (the VW enthusiast) will do the install.
I'm hoping to have no more than $5000 total investment in the vehicle at which point I should have a nice Passat Tdi wagon which is what I wanted.
The timing belt will be changed as will the balance shaft oil pump before it becomes my daily driver
Time will tell if I've made the right decision.

Update.

The 2004 1.8T wagon was sold in dec 2014, for $5000. It was a beautiful running car but was redundant (as I have the 2005 Tdi and a A6 Quattro) and was hardly being used. I hated to let it go.
Two weeks after the above vehicle was sold I came across another 2004 1.8T wagon 4 motion that the owner was told has no compression in one cylinder. I bought it for $600 and drove it home. It ran fine but had a CEL.
Turns out it had several air leaks so I've ordered parts to replace most of the PVC system.
Other than the above, I think I will also have most (all) vacuum lines and check valves renewed and hope for the best.
It came with two sets of tires and I really feel as though I got a sweet deal.
BTW, The Tdi with the manual conversion (and Malone tune) is still my favourite, but I am still waiting for VW Canada to get back to me re: the replacement of the rusted panels. Fingers crossed.

How did you find a 2002 with only 12 miles on it? Isn't it bad for a car to sit without being used?
His join date is 2002. I suspect he's reporting what he paid when he bought it in 2002.

This misunderstanding happens nearly every page on this thread. Original post should be amended to ask posters to cite the model year, trim level/equipment, mileage, condition and purchase date. Or maybe it already does.

04 GLS wagon, 1.8T manual FWD for 2200$, purchased January 2014. 140,000km on it, body in near mint condition. Had a bad thermostat so ended up doing thermostat, water pump, coolant sensor, timing belt, plugs, coils, injectors, wiring, full fluid flush, and threw a forge DV while I was in there. All in all car cost me around 4500$, not counting wheelset and stereo I had from my previous 03 Passat. Added coilovers and a fresh set of powder coated calipers since. Chipset coming soon!
