How many of you will keep your B5/B5.5 till she can't run anymore?

After reading Ponce's heartwarming thread, I got to thinking... How many of us would actually keep our cars till they "die"?

I'm still not sure. I've always sold my cars or traded them in. but theres something about Norah thats different. I'll definitely buy new cars in the future... but the jury's still out on whetehr I'll hold on to Norah till the end of her days....

how about you peeps?

I guess I'm a bit of a Pennsylvania Dutchman - despite being from California originally. I'd like to get about 10 years out of them at 15-20k per year. Anything after that is gravy. If I really hated the car, I guess that would change, but I love it. I can't picture myself or my wife driving anything else.

My $0.02.

I'm not sure, I've never owned any of my cars very long.. not more than 2-3 years. My passat is leased for 4, so that will be the longest yet...
I have a hankering for an A4 Avant with quattro.. have decided I really want/need quattro here in the mountains, so I can drive even more like a banshee.
I guess I'll make up my mind in 3 years, but I'm leaning towards turning it in. *sniffle*

I'm going to keep mine RIGHT up until I give in to my urge to trade in my Reflex Silver sedan for a Silverstone one.

I second-guess myself on that practically every day ... but then I remember what my car looks like after a day of detailing, and I fall in love again.

*sigh* I hate Boston.

Re: How many of you will keep your B5/B5.5 till ... (BoeserBlick)

I've had cars, had them done up, but after a couple of years, no matter how many compliments, I'd get sick of them. But with my Passat, it's different. I've had it for 2 years this past January, and am still not sick. Maybe, it's because I'm always doing something new, or maybe it's the Club B5 influence/friendly competition that keeps me on my toes.
BTW, Joe, you beter not get rid of Norah any time soon.

Re: How many of you will keep your B5/B5.5 till ... (BoeserBlick)

As much as I almost traded her in, I decided to keep her (at least for now). I did the math and for $10K trade-in if that, I'd rather have a decent daily driver and just save on a very nice sporty car for the future. I might upgrade to a K04 turbo and a sport clutch and replace the control arms but thats it.

She's four with 74K... Still like her more than any new model on the market. And with my tweaks, she's what I want in a car. Not to mention shes been very reliable. For the first time in my life I can say I'm going to drive it till she drops.
Love this car.... a definate keeper.

Re: How many of you will keep your B5/B5.5 till ... (BoeserBlick)

I've kept every car I've had until the maintenance costs became to expensive. 4 of them had over 100,000 miles before I moved on. The only car I ever traded in was my Z28 thanks to my insurance company wanting me to go assigned risk for an 8 cylinder sports once my new policy was due.

The first time I saw the [new] Passat, I knew it was Bad Ass and I knew I wanted it. I'm keeping it, and if it dies, I'm gonna resurrect it.

Bought mine 9/97 and plan on keeping her until she dies on me...

Funny, I was telling my wife last night that I wanted to get some HIDs since they're only $950. She told me to sell her and get the A4 that I want. Then I thought about my B5 and how she has been good to me, has a bunch of mods and I owe no money on her [paid her off in '98] - why would I want to get rid of her. She's a classic

I'll keep mine right up until I can get my hands on a Passat Variant PD TDI 5-spd manual, hopefully in 2006-2007.

Re: How many of you will keep your B5/B5.5 till ... (BoeserBlick)

I've kept all my cars at least ten years so far - but then again I only put about 67K on each of them in that length of time. ('68 Falcon Coupe until 1979; '79 Mustang Coupe (Turbo) until 1990; 1990 Honda AWD Civic Wagon until totalled in 1999 and now the Passat!)

With the Passat I'm up to 84K in just over three years.
I'd LIKE to keep it ten if I can, or at least until it's paid off.

At this point I look on it as a keeper.

I wonder what the market would be for a ten year old modded Passat?

Re: How many of you will keep your B5/B5.5 till ... (jwilker)

I have every intention (mind you intention) of keeping it till it die's, or at least in the family till it die's.

I plan on my currently 11 yo son inheriting it in 5 years. Should have about 140k on it by then, and therefor tons of life left.

He'll have to live with a wagon, but it'll be an all-wheel-drive pressurized monster by then, so tough break about the wagon part of it.

Your wife needs to talk to my wife. If my wife EVER told me to go get the A4 I would. The only problem would be getting it home with the "S" badge on it.

My B5 was the first car that I bought brand new. The Colorado Red still looks great, and the car is runnng better than ever at 70K miles. I don't see any reason to sell. Having the 944T as a backup is kinda nice.

Re: How many of you will keep your B5/B5.5 till ... (Kenny Payne)

We'll probably keep it for quite a few years...until keeping it becomes more of a burden than it's worth. My wife drives the car and she is more than content with it. If she is happy driving it for 6+ more years, then all the more money I'll have for my fun cars! As long as she's happy, I'm happy!

Re: How many of you will keep your B5/B5.5 till ... (BoeserBlick)

I have a few different scenario's but the most likely is:

Scenario 1: At a rate of only 5k miles a year, I'll have this car for well over 10 years. My 98' has just over 25,000. It will be 5 years old as of June 28th. So by the time I hit about 50,000-60,000 miles, it'll be time; I'll be too old for this type of suspension and wanting, (more than likely) a hybrid luxury car such as an A8 or BMW 9 series
Image

Scenario 2: Keep the Passat and let my daughter have it as her college car. Still buy the luxury car. Funny, her graduation from High School will be about the time I will want a new car. But this way, it stays with the family.

Scenario 3: IF something major happens to the car on the scale of "close" to being totaled. Then I'll consider a sell but if that happens, I'll try to get it back to stock as much as possible and sell the mods. off. Then sell the wreck for a new car. Depending upon the timing, a 2005 Mustang, or maybe even an S4 or A6 4.2 or BMW 5 series. Sorry, but if I have to go DBW, it's gonna be a nice one.

Re: How many of you will keep your B5/B5.5 till ... (idale)

Till it dies. Like Kenny has wisely done, I plan to add to the stable - with a convertible to feed my need for wind in the hair idiocy.

I had my first Integra for 8 years and 138K miles, and planned to drive it until the block cracked. Too bad some thieves liked it so much. My second Integra was a bust, and the first Golf was a small disaster, but we kept it for 8 years, too. I see the Passat in my garage for a very long time - especially since it is not likely another large, turbocharged, stick shift station wagon will be available for sale in the US anytime soon.

Re: How many of you will keep your B5/B5.5 till ... (BoeserBlick)

More and more I feel that I would like to keep my 4Motion and eventually slap on a PES supercharger instead of buying the V8 S4 I wanted. But then again, I might just go lease the V8 S4 and keep this 4Motion for a long time regardless. Both of my Passats are paid for (paid the loans off when I refinanced my house).
