front wheels and steering wheel shake when highway braking & it's not bad rotors/pads

The front wheels shake, sometimes rather violently enough that it loudly rattles the steering wheel, while braking from about 55+ mph... doesn't matter if it's light braking or heavy braking. This has been going on for about two years.

I can't remember if it was shaking before I swapped the springs and shocks with Neuspeed Sports and Koni Yellows about 3 years ago, so I know that the suspension isn't at fault.

Less than a year ago I upgraded/replaced the OE pads and rotors with the A6 front rotors, standard OE rear rotors, and new pads all around. I'm still shaking just as badly. I also replaced the tie rod ends with the S4 TRE's. I didn't notice any difference in the brake-shaking with this mod either.

What gives?

BUT have you actually checked your brake system/components thoroughly- Our v6 2001.5 glx did that for awhile and it turns out that the inside rotor was warped on the front right. new brakes fixed that.
**BUT** again as what someone had said- there could be other factors- from worned CA, or TREs, or damaged wheel -etc.

good luck and let us know what conclusion you come to

your rotors must be warped. the new set you got warped also, and possibly wasnt bedded in properly.

i suggest getting front rotors turned(milled flat) and putting new pads on front, then following a strict bedding process.

I dont see how CAs would cause this only when braking. Then it would shake in other encounters also.

Had a free brake inspection at Midas. Front rotors are warped and the rear left rotor is pretty bad too. The Midas guy quoted me $630 to replace all pads and resurface all rotors. What a joke. That's about how much I spent to upgrade to A6-size crossdilled front rotors, new rear rotors, new Axxis/PBR pads all round, AND the labor.

I don't get any pulsed-braking or shimmy effect with just hand-braking so I'm not concerned with the rear brakes. I just want the front rotors planed and front pads replaced. I have an extra set of pads, so I think I just need to pay for the labor.

yup, i'll be replacing the front pads and turning the rotors this weekend, and I'll bed them in myself this time, thank you very much. The brakes I have on now were bedded in by the mechanic, so I don't know what he did exactly. I'm going by what the pad manufacturer (PBR) says: 40 mpg, light/medium brake to 10 mph, cool off for 1/4 mile, and do this at least ten times.
Also I forgot to mention that my front brakes have been constantly squeaky the whole time and I haven't been happy about that either.

Apparently cross-drilled or slotted rotors can't or shouldn't be resurfaced. Anyway I replaced just the front pads and it seems to have fixed the shaking steering wheel and uneven pulsed braking. Let's see how these new pads that I bedded in myself will hold up. They're definitely not squeaking like crazy... yet... as the old identical Deluxe Plus pads did from the start.

After about 300 miles with the new Deluxe Plus front pads, both the squeal and the warped-brakes feeling are back, steering wheel shake and all. I'm right back where I was less than a month ago when I started this thread. It's like I never changed anything! I'll be replacing the apparently warped A8 312mm Zimmermann cross-drilled front rotors with A8 ATE plain rotors. I should have them on in a week or two. This whole A8 upgrade experience has really pissed on my mod parade. And so much for "getting what you pay for." I paid the extra bucks for the sexy cross-drilled rotors and they squealed from the first week they were on 23,000 miles ago. My plain ATE rear rotors never squealed once.
