AFAIK, there are NO non-synthetic oils that meet VW 502 spec

Besides, if you change your oil 2-4 times per year, is it really costing you that much extra?

Walmart usually carries M1 0w-40

 

I found and used the same thing on my last oil change. It says on the bottle that it meets VW specs. I also think Valvoline was one of the only oils on the "list" that made 5w30 and 5w40. I have looked every place I can think of around here and while I can find Mobil 1 0w40 Valvoline 5w30 is the only other oil from the list that is available. I've tried to stay away from 0w40 even I was running Mobil1 5w30 since new because I've read stories about consumption issues with 0w40.

 

I suppose not. You're right. Although I do by the Big Kahuna, as well. I guess what I really want is for someone to tell me what oil to use.
I live in Dallas weather, and don't really drive hard. My Passat is not a "V@r!@nt"... it's a station wagon for hauling my kids.

 

The Valvoline Synpower 5W-30 listed on the "list" DOES NOT meet VW 502.00 specs. Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic 5W-30 DOES meet VW spec but IS NOT listed on the "list".

 

VW Letter

Where can I find a copy of the letter from VW. I bought a Passat 1.8T in August. My dealer is clueless and just says they have never had a sludge issue. I also was looking for a list of oils that meet the 502 specs. I went to Pep Boys and they had Mobil-1 5W-30 but it not not mention anything about meeting VW-502 specs. Thanks

In Dallas weather, if it doesn't get below 40-50 (at least I hope it doesn't!), you could easily use a 10w- motor oil. If you never plan on driving up north during the winter, I'd say use the highest winter viscosity (XXw- ) motor oil you can find that meets VW 502 spec. It will probably be a 5w- or a 10w-.

Running a lower winter viscosity number will probably not be harmfull, you'll just be overprotecting yourself against colder weather.

 

So the lower the 'XXw' number is the better it is for winter/colder weather? I'll assume you want to run and '-40' at all climates?...

Can ya'll clarify what the "XXw-YY" numbers stand for? What should be good in Austin, TX (It only freezes 3 or so times a year here)? I'm running Castrol Syntec 10w-40 at the moment but it looks like I may need to find 5w-40...

 

The numbers are viscosity ratings at various temperatures.

The first number is winter or cold viscosity (hence the "w").
The lower this is, more viscous or fluid (or thin, if you will) the oil is at lower temps.

The second number is how much high temperature protection the oil provides.
The higher the number, the greater the protection it gives at higher temps.

Mobil1 0-40 in reality is quite good

and check the data on the oil, you will find that it is very good for the passat 1.8T. I have used it with every single oil change and have never had a consumption issue. I also use a bosch premium oil filter. Check out the data, as they said in dragnet, "just the facts."

 

M1 0W40 caused my V6 to experience oil consumption; a return to 5W40 caused such consumption to cease.

What's the worst that can happen? You might have to add oil. Just keep an eye on it to make sure that you don't incur any unexpected change in oil level. If it starts to drop, top it off and move onto something else next change. That's what I'd do.
