Exhaust leaks can cause some performance loss, though they may sound neat. Usually if it sounds "sputtery", it's from the manifold/flex pipe areas (in my experience), but you could have one further back at the muffler/resinator, which could be around the seams where parts join. Metal corrodes with time, and when water and other elements come in contact with it (especially when hot inside from exhaust gasses), things happen faster. I'd get it fixed, but I don't think it's a must do right now. Probably save up for a performance exhaust of some sort would be a good idea, even if it only makes you feel better about the "performance gain".
