I would check the little rubber Y shaped hose on the top of the airbox. I was working on my airbox and the thing ripped with no force at all. It is part of the EVAP control system and runs about eight bucks at the dealer.

I checked the top of the airbox. I didn't find anything loose or disconnected. I am not really sure about the Y shaped thing you mentioned though. I didn't see anything exactly like what you described.

It could be your Evap Purge Valve. I've had mine replaced once, but last time I cleaned it and that cleared the CEL. This valve sits on top of the airbox(for V6s) and has two vacuum hoses and one electrical connection to it. I sprayed some carb cleaner into it from both ends and sloshed it around a little. HTH.

I'm having the gasoline smell problem right now and I'm trying to troubleshoot my entire EVAP system. I've looked at the purge control valve near the airbox and it doesn't seem to be a problem - at least not that I can tell. I start the car and don't smell any gas near it. But, it seems to be a part that fails quite often judging by the posts discussing the EVAP system.

If the purge control valve fails to open, does it impact other EVAP components upstream of it? I thought maybe that if the system can't bleed out, a build up of pressure may cause a line to fail, etc.

I haven't had a chance to look at the EVAP canister or the leak detection pump yet.

I'm not seeing a CEL, just the gas smell.

Any help troubleshooting this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Also check the solenoid (valve for the evap system) on top of the airbox. It has a hose coming out of each end, and a 2-wire plug. Pull it off, and see if you can blow thru it. You shouldn't get any air thru. If you can, then that is very likely it, sans any other leak in the system.
