Engine Vibration after Timing Belt Job

I have a 2001.5 Passas 1.8 Turbo, which I purchased new and I had the complete timing belt job done for the first time at 162,000 miles. After picking up the car the next day I noticed a strong vibration coming from the engine. I did not have that vibration prior to the timing belt job. I took the car back and the told the mechanic about it, he checked the car and said yes he noticed the vibration. He claims that it could be one of my engine mounts. I said well I didn’t have that vibration prior to the timing belt job. He said it had nothing to do with the timing belt job. He said if the timing belt was even a little bit off the check engine light would come on. This mechanic works on only VW and Audi’s and I have used him for years, actually he is a retired VW mechanic. I feel the vibration has something to do with the timing belt job. Please if anyone has any ideas it would really help. The vibration is driving me nuts.

I just think it was a fluke and your motor mount just needs to be replaced. It was bound to go with 162k on it and if you go to your mechanic all the time I would imagine he wouldnt take advantage of you. If you timing was off you definately would have other things going wrong. I did my timing belt and then when i started it my o2 sensor went out. Just a fluke thing. If he said it was your motor mount have him fix it and your problem will be solved and as him for a deal since you just did your tb. 162K on original tb...lucky...i thought i was pushing it at 120k with it runing good and it looked like i could have gone alot more but didnt want to take the chance on needing a new top end.

Thanks guys for your replies. There isn't any lost of power, nothing different with the engine besides the vibration. I know it very well could be the motor mounts. But its odd that when i brought car in there was no vibration. That's why i am not buying the motor mount story. I mean when did the motor mounts go while they had the car, dosen't add up.

check the snub mount. If not centered it can cause extra vibration. You should probably get a new one anyways at that mileage.

I did my own timing belt on a 89k 2003 v6 this summer. Noticed the same problem of vibration right afterwords. Went in last week to make an adjustment to the position to the front end of the bumper. Noticed I had put it together too high. Upon lowering it and putting it back together, everything is back to normal.

The engine and the sub mount need to be set center by changing the position of the front bumper or the position of the sub mount bracket.

First thing to check is the adjustment of the snub mount.

Second thing to check is for misfires (live read using VCDS) and fuel trims. If something like a coil pack decided to go bad or if there is a vacuum leak from a hose that failed during all the TB work, the engine could be running a bit rough. If the engine is idling rough, you can feel it in the cabin.
