ECU access & inspection ... need help.

Anyone have any tips on how to access and inspect the ECU? I can't get access to the rear bolt holding the plastic top over the ECU enclosure. Do I have to remove the plastic strip along the base of the windshield? If so, how do I get it away from the wipers? Also, are there any specific signs/symptoms of problems once I get the enclosure open?

To get to the back bolt i used a 1/4 inch driver with an 8mm socket, its a little hard to get but once you break it lose you can pull it out by hand, when you put the screws back in DO NOT over tighten then it will strip the plastic, ask me how i know that.

Why are you looking at the ECU are you having problems starting it or other issues?

Thanks vwb5t. I'm inspecting the ECU because as described here:

http://www.passatworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=253881

I just figured I wouldn't clutter the other thread with ECU details just in-case someone thinks it is something other than the ECU.

I was able to get the top off just as you described. And thanks very much for the heads-up on the stripping of the plastic ... I was just thinking to myself, "I wonder how much these bolts should be tightened to prevent leaking."

With it open, nothing jumps out at me as out-of-the ordinary except the relay?? marked 373 which was slightly tweaked so that the some contacts were slightly pulling out of the socket. I pushed it back in, but believe it still had contact in the original position. I'm going to clean the debris out from behind the box as I have a little better access now. If anyone has any comments on how else to inspect the ECU enclosure, let me know.

If you have any feedback on the other thread, that would be great too!

733 is the SAIP relay, so that has nothing to do with the injection. as for looking around you might wanna try and unplug the ECU and replugging it it making sure that it has complete contact with the pins, i had a problem when i swapped ECU's and the ECU wasn't fully engaged into the wiring harness and i got a bunch of odd codes what i needed to do was unplug the ECU and plug it back in and then use some force and make sure it was connected right i wiggled them and made sure they were making full contact.

As for the screws just snug them done do not go to tight their is a gasket so all you need to do is snug it down, hell i left the rear screw out as i change ECU's fairly frequently for various reasons, been that way for 6 months no problem.

vwb5t ... Could that 373 relay cause an intermittent P0411 (SAIP wrong flow) error? Because I've been battling that for months (and maybe a year) now.

I will make note of unplugging/replugging the ECU suggestion ... but unless I see those codes again, I'm going to leave it alone for now. Everything inside the enclosure looks very clean and no sign of water. So I guess that's a good thing.

It is one thing that may cause the P0411, but the relay supplies the main power to the SAIP, so it will either run or not run. It is about a $80 relay at the dealership. Also check the 40A fuse that supplies the relay.

Thx Jay ... I saw that mentioned on another thread. I popped the cover off, but my larger socket set was too big to access the bolt.

Well all the debris is out from behind the ECU enclosure. I don't think there was enough to create a dam, but it can't hurt to get it out of there. It is odd how there is no drain hole in the corner near the enclosure. Now off to clean under the battery, as suggested on the other thread.

If anyone has any other ECU inspection suggestions, I'll leave the cover off for now. Thanks.

Yeah, GSO, unlikely cause of P0411. Just curious since I haven't found the source of that problem yet. $80?? Geez, is that thing made of pure gold or something?

When cleaning the corner near the ECU enclosure I found this loose triangular rubber thing (which is in my hand now) about 2-inches long ... anyone know what this could be?
